Turnovers costly as Panthers stake out six goal lead and don't look back
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (March 30, 2013) – Adelphi University, ranked fifth in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, scored the first six goals of the game and didn't look back in posting a key 12-5 victory over 10th-ranked Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Motamed Field today.
Junior Melyssa Mathewson (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) led Adelphi with two goals and two assists for four points, while sophomore Danielle Jaycox (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) netted a team-best three goals with two ground balls, a draw control and caused turnover. Senior Sara Sangiorgio (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), junior Devan Cremi (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and freshman Rachel O'Brien (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blueport) all contributed a pair of goals for the Panthers, with Crimi also tallying three ground balls, a draw control and two caused turnovers.

Junior Jordann Dempsey (Sparks, Md./Hereford) registered nine saves in goal to preserve the win for Adelphi, which finished with a 35-16 advantage for shots in the game, forcing 23 Stonehill turnovers. Sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) posted a season-high 13 saves in the Skyhawks net, with the team notching a 12-7 edge in draw controls.
Senior Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) and junior Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) both netted two goals for Stonehill. Sophomore Elizabeth Lane (Sandwich, Mass./Bishop Stang) chipped in with a goal, two draw controls, a ground ball and caused turnover, while senior All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) dished an assist to go with four draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Adelphi scored the first six goals of the game to assume control and its lead wouldn't go below five goals again. The game was scoreless until Jaycox scored the first two goals just over a minute apart, the latter coming with 20:36 left in the half. Mathewson and Crimi added unassisted markers before O'Brien gave the Panthers a five goal lead with 13:02 remaining. After a goal from sophomore Alexa Froccaro (Sand Point, N.Y./Port Washington) with 12:15 left, Stonehill got on the scoreboard with a free-position goal by Lane with 8:49 to play.
Crimi netted her second goal of the half with a free-position marker with five seconds left to send Adelphi into halftime with a 7-1 lead. Sangiorgio opened the second half with her first goal of the afternoon after 2:03, extending the Panthers lead to seven goals. Sullivan followed with her first goal of the game with 22:46 to play, but Adelphi countered with back to back goals from Sangiorgio and Jaycox to run its lead to eight goals (10-2) with 18:19 left.
Shannahan and Sullivan netted goals 50-seconds apart to trim Stonehill's deficit to six (10-4) with 14:46 to play, but Adelphi got goals from Mathewson and O'Brien to squash all hopes of a Skyhawks comeback. Shannahan rounded out the scoring for Stonehill with her second of the game, off a feed from junior Mary Lee Mahony (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) with 1:04 to play.
Stonehill (6-3, 5-1 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday when it visits Southern New Hampshire University for a Conference matchup at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks don't return home until Tuesday, April 9, to host Bentley University, currently ranked 8th nationally, at 7 p.m. Adelphi (9-0, 5-0 NE-10) visits Southern New Hampshire next Saturday at 4 p.m.
