Skyhawks post fifth straight win behind Mahony's six points, Sullivan's five goals
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 29, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, outscored American International College 10-1 after halftime to run away with an 18-5 victory in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Ronald J. Abdow Field this afternoon.
Sophomore Mary Lee Mahony (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) totaled six points with three goals and three assists, while junior Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) netted five goals to lead Stonehill to its fifth-straight win and remain perfect in Conference play. Junior Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) contributed three goals, a ground ball and caused turnover, while freshman Jillian Yung (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) netted two goals to go with four caused turnovers, four ground balls and two draw controls. Junior All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) chipped in with a goal and assist with three draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Junior All-American Rebecca Moore (Marlborough, Mass./St. Mark's School) posted eight saves (five first half) in goal for Stonehill. The Skyhawks finished with a 34-20 advantage for shots on the afternoon, converting 5-of-8 free position shots, while American International was 0-for-4 for free position attempts. Stonehill was successful on 17-of-18 clear attempts, limiting the Yellow Jackets to 15-for-21, with AIC finishing with a 13-12 edge in draw controls. Sophomore Nicole Sawula (Hatfield, Mass./Northampton) registered 13 stops in the goal for American International.

Seniors Ashleigh and Courtney Szawlowski (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) both finished with three points for American International. Ashleigh totaled two goals and an assist with five draw controls, while Courtney added a goal and two assists with two ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover. Junior Bridget Szawlowski (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) chipped in with a goal and two caused turnovers.
Ashleigh Szawlowski struck first for AIC with the opening goal, assisted by junior Jamie Gruschow (East Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta), just 39-seconds into the contest. Stonehill responded a minute later when Sullivan netted her first of the game to start a string of five straight goals. Sullivan and Mahony both scored two goals, while freshman Cassandra McGill (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) added a marker for the Skyhawks.
AIC answered with three goals over a three minute span to pull within one (5-4) after a Courtney Szawlowski score, assisted by Ashleigh Szawlowski, with 9:34 to play in the half. Courtney Szawlowski played a role in all three Yellow Jacket scores during that run with a goal and two assists, while Ashley Szawlowski had a goal and assist.
Stonehill quieted the run when Green scored on a free-position shot with 9:02 left in the frame as the Skyhawks scored the last three goals of the half to take an 8-4 lead into intermission. Sullivan and freshman Keri Gould (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) each added goals for Stonehill.
Stonehill kept the run going into the second half, netting the first six goals of the frame to take control (14-4). Yung and Green both scored twice during that stretch that saw the Skyhawks open a ten goal lead with 19:05 left, while Mahony and Reilly each recorded a goal and assist. After an unassisted goal by Bridget Szawlowski with 18:09 to play, the Skyhawks scored the final four goals of the contest, two by Sullivan, to cap the scoring.
Stonehill (7-1, 5-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it visits 7th-ranked University of New Haven for a key NE-10 matchup at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, April 7, to host defending National Champion Adelphi University at 11:30 a.m. American International (1-6, 1-4 NE-10) visits 8th-ranked Bentley University on Saturday at noon.
