Lynott's seven points leads Skyhawks to second-straight win over ranked opponent

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 15, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, claimed its second win over a ranked opponent to start the year with a commanding 19-6 triumph over 15th-ranked Pfeiffer University at Barker Family Stadium on the campus of Rollins College this afternoon.

Senior All-American Samantha Lynott (Holbrook, N.Y./East Sachem) led the way for Stonehill with seven points as she netted four goals and dished three assists to go with six draw controls. Junior Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) added four goals for the Skyhawks, while freshman Mikayla Couch (Towaco, N.J./DePaul Catholic) netted the first three goals of her career. Junior All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) contributed two goals and an assist for three points with seven draw controls, while sophomore Mary Lee Mahony (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) had a goal and two assists. Junior Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) and freshman Keri Gould (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) each chipped in with two goals.

Freshman Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) made her first collegiate start in goal for Stonehill and made four saves to collect the win. Junior Jamie Alcala (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonel Forge) made one save, while conceding eight goals, in the opening 15:12 in net for Pfeiffer to take the loss, before giving way to freshman Rachel McCarthy (Austin, Texas/St. Andrews) who stopped four shots over the final 44:48.

Senior Liz Melesh (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) scored a pair of goals for Pfeiffer. Junior Shannon Bonnel (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) chipped in a goal and four draw controls.

Stonehill finished with a 29-16 advantage in shots and 17-9 edge in draw controls. The Skyhawks were successful on all 15 clear attempts and converted 5-of-9 free-position shots. Pfeiffer cleared 12 of 17 attempts and was 4-for-5 on free-position shots.

Stonehill scored the first six goals over the opening 10:20 of the contest and never looked back. Green and Sullivan scored two goals each during the opening run, while Mahony had a goal and assist. The Skyhawks went up 9-1 after two straight goals from Couch and Lynott's first marker with 13:45 to play in the half on their way to a 13-2 halftime lead. Green capped the first half scoring with a free-position goal with 47-seconds left.

Pfeiffer scored two of the first three goals of the second half before Stonehill erased any doubt in the outcome with three straight markers to open a 17-4 lead with 5:55 remaining. Lynott played a role in the Skyhawks first four goals of the second half with two goals and two assists.

Stonehill (2-0, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday for a clash with No. 5 Rollins College at noon. The Skyhawks home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, March 21, when it hosts Saint Anselm College for the first NE-10 matchup of the spring at 4 p.m. Pfeiffer (4-4, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) hosts Indiana (Pa.) University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
