Skyhawks hold Rams scoreless in second half, wrap up a winning spring break

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 17, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II national poll, shut out Shepherd University in the second half on the way to a 23-5 victory Thursday in a non-conference matchup at Rollins College.
Junior Sam Lynott (Holbrook, N.Y./East Sachem) notched eight points and junior Sarah Galligan (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) scored four times as the Skyhawks claimed their second victory of the week to conclude the spring break schedule. Senior Hannah Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) scored once and dished out four assists to join Lynott and Galligan as active 100-point scorers.
Shepherd’s Shannon Carta (Davidsonville, Md./South River) scored off the opening draw to put the Rams on the board first, but Stonehill reeled off a 12-0 run in response as Galligan put away three goals and freshman Mary Lee Mahony (Hackensack, N.J./Villa Joseph Marie) added a pair. After Lynott scored from Anderson to send Stonehill up 12-1 midway through the half, the Rams recovered for four straight goals from Carta, Kaitlyn Drake (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) and Christina Ferrara (California, Md./Leonardtown), but the Skyhawks maintained a 14-5 advantage at halftime.

The Stonehill defense limited Shepherd, who came in averaging over 15 goals per game, to three shots on target in the second half as the Skyhawks won 10 of the final 11 draw controls. Sophomore Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and freshman Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) each scored twice and Shannahan scooped three ground balls, while sophomore Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) added two goals and caused two turnovers.
Sophomore Rebecca Moore (Marlborough, Mass./St. Mark's School) earned the decision in net with two first-half saves, while sophomore Caitlyn Taveira (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) and freshman Kate McCarthy (Milton, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) combined for three stops during the second half. The Skyhawks’ 5-0 start is their best since the 2007 season.
Stonehill (5-0, 2-0 NE-10) resumes Northeast-10 Conference competition next Tuesday at Saint Anselm College at 4 p.m.
