Anderson pours in six goals as Skyhawks take charge late
WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 15, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II national poll, turned in a strong second half to earn an 11-9 victory over host Rollins College, among teams receiving votes in the national poll.
Senior Hannah Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) scored six times to lead Stonehill back from a halftime deficit, junior Sam Lynott (Holbrook, N.Y./East Sachem) added three goals, and sophomore Rebecca Moore (Marlborough, Mass./St. Mark's School) made 12 saves as the Skyhawks claimed the non-conference win and moved to 4-0 on the season. Rollins was led by two goals apiece from Marissa Giannerini (Baltimore, Md.) and Ginevra Czech (Maplewood, N.J.), and the Tars battled to a second-half advantage until Stonehill sparked a comeback.

Rollins outshot the Skyhawks 20-5 in the first half to dominate the offensive momentum, but Moore was up to the challenge with nine saves (eight on free-position shots), and the Tars could only trade goals with Stonehill as they held a 4-3 lead at halftime. Anderson and Czech each scored twice in the opening 30 minutes, and sophomore Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) converted an early free-position attempt for the Skyhawks.
Giannerini and junior Tori Snow (Marblehead, Mass.) scored twice within five minutes to open a 6-3 lead for Rollins in the second half, but Anderson pushed back with a goal just nine seconds later to begin a 7-1 run for the Skyhawks. Over the next 13 minutes, Anderson and Lynott each scored three goals and freshman Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.J./Morris Catholic) added one to build a 10-7 lead with less than 15 minutes to play. Rollins came back with a pair from Giannerini and Katie Palasz (Granby, Mass.), but Anderson tacked on an insurance goal with 4:33 remaining to seal the win.
Sophomore Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) led the Skyhawks’ defensive efforts with four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Shannahan, Lynott, sophomore Sarah Galligan (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional), and senior Emily Kerwin (Bristol, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) each picked up three ground balls, and Stonehill limited the Tars to just two shots over the final ten minutes.
Stonehill (4-0, 2-0 NE-10) will be back in Winter Park on Thursday for a non-conference faceoff with Shepherd University at noon.
