Chargers outscore Skyhawks 8-2 in overtime after Raymond's tying three

EASTON, Mass. (March 3, 2019) – Northeast Division No. 2-seeded Stonehill College, ranked No. 6 in the latest NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, erased a four-point deficit with 30-seconds to play to force overtime, but was held to just two points in the extra frame as Southwest No. 3 University of New Haven locked down a 58-52 overtime triumph in quarterfinal round action of the 2019 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.
New Haven (18-11, 10-10 NE10) advances to Thursday's NE10 semifinal round, and will visit the Southwest's top-seed Le Moyne College (22-5, 15-5 NE10) in Syracuse, New York, at 7 p.m. The Dolphins advanced with a 74-63 victory over NE No. 4 Merrimack College (20-10, 12-9 NE10) this afternoon. Stonehill (19-9, 14-7 NE10) must now await a potential at large bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament when the selection show airs next Sunday night.

Senior Alexandria Kerr led three New Haven players in double-figures with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-20 shooting, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists. She scored 13 points after halftime, including four of the Chargers eight points in overtime. Junior Micah Wormack added 12 points, five rebounds and four steals, with her jumper with 45-seconds left in the extra period putting New Haven in front for good. Sophomore Brie Pergola contributed 12 points and four boards, while freshman Camryn DeBose pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, while chipping in five points, three assists and two steals.
Freshman Kayla Raymond (Easton, Massachusetts/Oliver Ames) led three Stonehill players in double-figures with 12 points, including a three-pointer with 8.5-seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime, adding five rebounds and three blocked shots. Sophomore Jennifer Worden added 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while junior Grace Carter also netted 11 points, with three boards and two assists. Junior Gabrielle Reuter chipped in with a team-high eight rebounds (five offensive) and two blocked shots.
Worden and Raymond's three-pointers rallied Stonehill from a four-point deficit (48-44) after two New Haven free-throws by Pergola with 30-seconds to play. Worden's triple drew the Skyhawks within a point with 22-seconds to go, and then after Wormack canned two free-throws, Raymond connected with her second of two three-point tries with 8.5-seconds left that knotted the score (50-50) and sent the game to overtime, when a last-second three-point look from Pergola caromed off the rim.
Kerr opened the scoring in overtime with a jumper 38-seconds in, which was answered by a Raymond jumper with 3:46 remaining. The game remained deadlocked until Wormack buried a shot in the paint with 45-seconds to play. After a Stonehill timeout, Carter missed her three-point try to push the Skyhawks in front, but junior Kelsey Shaw came away with the offensive rebound for another chance, but Wormack forced a steal and then Kerr was fouled and made both free-throws to put New Haven up two possessions (56-52) with 30-seconds left. DeBose sealed the UNH win with two more free-throws with 19-seconds to go after another Stonehill miss.
The loss is Stonehill's first this season (16-1) when holding a halftime lead, and just its second over the last 41 games it has led at the intermission dating back to 2017. The Skyhawks scored the first seven points of the game on their way to a ten point cushion halfway through the second quarter. Raymond opened the game with her first three-pointer of the afternoon on its way to a seven-point lead after a Worden layup two and a half minutes into the game.
New Haven drew within one (11-10) after a quarter of play following a Wormack jumper and Kerr layup in the final 29-seconds of the frame. Stonehill buried three-straight three-pointers, including a pair by Carter, to open the largest lead of the afternoon by either side (22-12) midway through the second. The Chargers followed that 9-0 Stonehill spurt with a 14-4 run to pull even (26-26) after a layup from freshman Sydney Richard with a minute to go before the break. Pergola scored eight points during that stretch, including two three-pointers.
Reuter sent Stonehill into halftime with the lead (28-26) and the Skyhawks reclaimed a seven-point advantage (33-26) less than a minute into the third quarter after a Shaw three and Raymond jumper. Kerr gave New Haven its first lead of the game (36-35) halfway through the third quarter and then added a three-pointer to stretch the edge to four (39-35) heading into the fourth. The Skyhawks would struggle through a 12-minute stretch without a field goal before Carter buried a three with 5:43 remaining in the fourth to regain the lead (40-39).
However, DeBose answered that with a triple of her own to push New Haven back in front and the Chargers grabbed its first of three four-point leads in the final 90-seconds of regulation on a layup by Kerr (44-40) with 1:27 on the clock.
