Martin leads Skyhawks with game-high 22 points, five rebounds and four assists
WORCESTER, Mass. (December 5, 2017) – Stonehill College, receiving votes in this week's Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II poll and ranked sixth in the D2SIDA East Region poll, took control in the second quarter and didn't look back in posting a 75-51 triumph over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at Andrew Laska Gymnasium tonight.
Senior Kelly Martin (Scituate, Massachusetts/Scituate) paced Stonehill to its sixth-straight win with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-21 shooting, including 4-for-11 from three-point distance, while converting 4-of-5 free-throws, with a team-high matching five rebounds, four assists and two steals, posting her second turnover-free game of the season. Classmate Samantha Hyslip (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) was the only other Skyhawk in double-figures with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, converting all four free-throws, with five rebounds (four offensive), two assists, a blocked shot and steal.
Freshman Madison Seymour (Glastonbury, Connecticut/Glastonbury) added a season-high eight points, with two rebounds and two steals in 13 minutes off the bench for Stonehill, while sophomore Gabrielle Reuter (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Lawrence Academy) chipped in seven points, three boards and two steals. Senior Courtney Walsh (Windham, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) dished out a career-best seven assists.

Junior Morgan O'Donnell (Easton, Massachusetts/Ursuline Academy) led Assumption with a double-double performance of ten points and ten rebounds, with two assists and two blocked shots. Senior Morgan O'Brien (Reading, Massachusetts/Reading) also netted ten points for the Greyhounds with four rebounds, while senior Teneya McLaughlin (Milford, Connecticut/Joseph A. Foran) and sophomore Brianna Capacchione (Washington Township, New Jersey/Washington Township) each chipped in with seven points.
Assumption held a five-point lead (12-7) after a first quarter in which Stonehill made just 3-of-17 shots from the field (17.6%). Stonehill emerged from the break and reeled off the first 20 points of the second frame to grab the lead and extend it to 15 (27-12) midway through. The Skyhawks buried four three-pointers, including a trio by Martin who scored 11 points in all during the stretch, before Hyslip capped the run with back-to-back layups.
Assumption pulled back within nine (32-23) with an O'Brien jumper with two minutes to play in the half, but Stonehill was able to carry a double-digit lead (35-25) into the intermission. The Skyhawks scored the first seven points of the third quarter to stretch their lead to 17 (42-25) after two free throws from Reuter three and a half minutes in. The Greyhounds would not get any closer than 13 the rest of the way, with Stonehill grabbing a 20-point lead (53-33) with two Hyslip free throws with 1:58 to play in the third.
O'Donnell scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter to draw Assumption within 15 (53-38), but Stonehill sealed the win from there, using a 17-4 run to bust open a 28-point cushion (70-42) following Reuter layup with 2:48 left.
Stonehill (6-1, 4-1 NE10) is back in action on Saturday, when it visits Southern New Hampshire University, ranked tenth in the D2SIDA East Region poll, for its final NE10 matchup of the semester at 1:30 p.m. The Skyhawks do not return to Merkert Gym until it rings in the New Year with a non-conference contest with Roberts Wesleyan College on New Year's Day at 1 p.m. Assumption (1-6, 0-6 NE10) hosts Franklin Pierce University on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
