Impellizeri scores 16 of her game-high 18 points to lead Greyhounds breakaway
WORCESTER, Mass. (February 11, 2017) – Assumption College, ranked eighth in this week's D2SIDA East Region poll, pulled away in the second half to post a 53-44 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at Laska Gymnasium this afternoon.
Senior Jo Impellizeri (Seaford, New York/Saint Anthony's) led Assumption to its second straight win with a game-high 18 points, including 16 in the second half, on 8-of-10 shooting, converting 2-of-3 free-throws, to go with four rebounds, two steals, an assist and blocked shot. Senior Kelly Carey (Long Beach, New York/Holy Trinity) added 14 points and six rebounds, while classmate Allison Stoddard (East Lyme, Connecticut/East Lyme) rounded out the Greyhounds in double-figures with 11 points and three assists. Senior Jaclyn Storey (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) and junior Kiera O'Donnell (Cheshire, Connecticut/Holy Cross) each chipped in with five rebounds.
Sophomore Maty Diabate (Holden, Massachusetts/Wachusett Regional) paced Stonehill with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor, while converting 6-of-8 free-throws, with three rebounds and a steal. Junior Samantha Hyslip (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) was the only other Skyhawk in double-figures with ten points, nine rebounds (five offensive) and an assist, while junior Elizabeth Grip (Shrewsbury, Massachusetts/Shrewsbury) and freshman Kelsey Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) each netted eight points. Shaw also tallied three rebounds and three steals, while Grip hauled in four boards.
Assumption finished shooting 40-percent from the field (20-for-50), including 44.4% (12-27) in the second half, connecting on 3-of-14 three-pointers and converting 10-of-15 free-throws (66.7%) for the afternoon. Stonehill held a 37-30 rebounding advantage, but the Greyhounds outscored the visitors 10-4 on second chance points to go with a 16-11 edge in points off turnovers. The Skyhawk were limited to 32-percent shooting (16-for-50) for the contest, including 30.4% (7-23) in the second half, missing on all five three-point tries, while connecting on 12-of-17 free-throws (70.6%).

Assumption held a two point edge at halftime (24-22) after a back and forth first half, before outscoring Stonehill 16-9 in the third quarter to begin to take control of the game. With the game tied (26-26) after two Diabate free-throws 90-seconds into the third quarter, Stoddard buried a three and Impellizeri added a layup to give the Greyhounds a five point lead with 7:19 remaining in the quarter.
Assumption stretched its lead to six (35-29) after a Carey jumper midway through the third and then neither team scored for over two minutes before Grip made a pair of free-throws for Stonehill with 2:52 left. The Greyhounds answered with the final five points, including three from Impellizeri, of the frame to open a nine point lead (40-31) heading into the fourth quarter.
Hyslip scored the first basket of the fourth quarter to draw Stonehill within seven, but Assumption was able to extend its lead into double figures for the first time (44-33) after a basket and two free-throws by Carey. Back to back baskets from sophomore Nicole Rojas (Cromwell, Connecticut/Crowell) and Hyslip pulled the Skyhawks within seven again with seven minutes to play, but Assumption answered with seven straight points to run its lead to 14 (51-37) with a three-point play by Impellizeri with 3:17 remaining to seal the win.
Stonehill (10-12, 9-9 NE10) returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Saint Anselm College at Merkert Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. Assumption (16-7, 11-7 NE10) visits Merrimack College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
