Walsh nets game-high 21 points, Hyslip notches fourth double-double for Skyhawks
EASTON, Mass. (January 28, 2017) – Stonehill College outscored The College of Saint Rose by 16 points in the third quarter on its way to a 67-54 triumph in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action on Alumnae Day on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.
Juniors Courtney Walsh (Windham, New Hampshire/Central Catholic) and Samantha Hyslip (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) paved the way for Stonehill's second straight win and fourth in six games. Walsh netted a game-high 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field, including 5-for-9 from three-point distance, with three assists and two blocked shots, while Hyslip posted her fourth double-double of the season (seventh career) with ten points and a career-high 15 rebounds to go with a career-high matching four blocked shots and career-best three steals, connecting on all six free-throw attempts.
Freshman guard Kelsey Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) contributed her first career double-double with ten points and a season-high ten rebounds with three assists, while sophomore Maty Diabate (Holden, Massachusetts/Wachusett Regional) totaled nine points, four boards and two steals. Sophomore Nicole Rojas (Cromwell, Connecticut/Cromwell) also netted nine points for the Skyhawks, canning 7-of-8 free-throws, while classmate Tayler Wornum (Randolph, Massachusetts/Archbishop Williams) grabbed six boards.
Senior Taylor Nazon (Chicago, Illinois/Trinity) was the lone Saint Rose player in double-figures with 15 points on 5-of-18 shooting, including 2-for-7 from three-point distance, converting 3-of-4 free-throws, with four rebounds. Sophomore Karissa Birthwright (Rochester, New York/Odyssey Academy) and Staci Barrett (Elmont, New York/Long Island Lutheran) both added eight points for the Golden Knights, with Barrett shooting 4-for-7 from the field with five rebounds. Sophomore Zoe McDonald (Romulus, New York/Romulus) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, with three blocked shots and two steals.

Stonehill shot 37.9-percent from the field (22-for-58), including 5-for-18 (27.8%) from three-point distance, converting 18-of-22 free-throws (81.8%). The Skyhawks shot 42.9-percent in the second half and posted a 45-35 rebounding advantage, although Saint Rose held a 14-9 edge in second chance points and a 12-7 margin in points off turnovers. The Golden Knights were limited to 35.5% shooting (22-for-62), including 27.6% (8-29) in the second half, connecting on 4-of-18 three-pointers (22.2%) and 6-of-10 free-throws (60%).
Stonehill trailed by six at the half (33-27), but Walsh opened the third quarter with a three-pointer as the hosts scored the first five points of the second half. Saint Rose restored a four point cushion (36-32) after a Nazon free-throw three minutes into the third quarter, but Stonehill reeled off a 13-2 run to open a seven point lead (45-38) after a Wornum layup with 2:52 to play in the quarter. The Skyhawks extended the run to 17-3 to close out the quarter to open a ten point advantage (49-39) after a Diabate jumper to end the frame.
Saint Rose wouldn't get closer than six points throughout the fourth quarter, with Stonehill answering each time to seal the win. The Golden Knights were within seven (61-54) after a layup by junior Morgan Sullivan (Burnt Hills, New York/Burnt Hills) with 1:41 to play, but Walsh answered with a three-pointer and the Skyhawks scored the final six points of the game to clinch the win.
Stonehill (9-9, 8-6 NE10) is on the road Wednesday, when it visits rival Bentley University, ranked 20th in this week's WBCA Division II poll, at 5:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday to host Franklin Pierce University as part of Alumni Weekend at the College at 1:30 p.m. Saint Rose (11-9, 6-8 NE10) visits Le Moyne College on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
