Walsh scores game-high 18 points for Skyhawks in defeat
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (January 4, 2017) – Le Moyne College picked up a 60-50 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at Ted Grant Court tonight.
Freshman McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, New York/Cicero-North Syracuse) led Le Moyne with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists, shooting 5-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-7 from three-point distance, and converting all four free-throw attempts. Junior Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, New York/Skaneateles) posted a double-double for the Dolphins with ten points and a game-high 11 rebounds (six offensive) and two blocked shots. Freshman Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Massachusetts/Bishop Fenwick) added eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, hitting her lone three-point attempt, with three rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench, while junior Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pennsylvania/Central Bucks East) chipped in with nine boards and a pair of blocks.
Junior Courtney Walsh (Windham, New Hampshire/Central Catholic) led Stonehill with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, with four rebounds and two steals. No other Skyhawk reached double figures, with freshman Kelsey Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) adding nine points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal off the bench, while sophomore Maty Diabate (Holden, Massachusetts/Mount Wachusett) registered eight points, burying all four free-throw attempts, with five boards, two steals and a blocked shot. Juniors Kate Ross (Fall River, Massachusetts/The Lincoln School) and Samantha Hyslip (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) each chipped in with a team-high seven rebounds, while Ross also netted six points and collected six offensive rebounds.
Le Moyne shot just 36.1-percent from the field (22-for-61), including 6-for-17 (35.3%) from three-point distance, converting 10-of-15 (66.7%) free-throws for the contest. The Dolphins posted a 49-39 rebounding advantage and despite turning the ball over two more times than the visitors (12-10), held an 11-8 edge in points off turnovers. Stonehill was limited to 30-percent shooting (18-60), including 29% (9-31) in the first half, making just 4-of-15 threes (25.7%) and converting only 10-of-20 (50%) free-throws.

Stonehill jumped out to a quick five point lead, scoring seven of the first nine points in the contest after a Walsh three-pointer three minutes into the first quarter. Le Moyne quickly forced a 9-9 tie after a layup from sophomore Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, New York/Catholic Central) with 5:42 to play in the quarter and then after Ross answered with a basket for the Skyhawks, Purcell buried a three-pointer two minutes later to push the Dolphins in front (14-11) with four minutes to go.
Baskets from Diabate and Hyslip to open the second quarter gave Stonehill the lead (17-16) after two minutes, but the Skyhawks wouldn't lead again as Roberts drilled a three-pointer to put Le Moyne back in front and then Corcoran scored a three-point play to push the Dolphins lead to five (22-17) with 6:33 to play in the half. Le Moyne took an eight point cushion (31-23) into halftime and then scored the first four points of the second half to push its lead into double-figures (35-23) after a Dobrovosky layup less than a minute in.
Le Moyne's lead grew to 14 (39-25) after a basket from junior Nicole Riddick (Albany, New York/Colonie) with 5:33 to play in the third. The Dolphins carried a 13-point margin (44-31) into the final quarter, but Walsh pulled Stonehill within nine (45-36) with a three-pointer three minutes in. The Skyhawks would get no closer and five straight points from Corcoran restored Le Moyne's 14 point lead (52-38) with five minutes remaining. Stonehill closed the gap to nine points once more (58-48) with a layup from Diabate, but there was just 28-seconds left and Le Moyne did enough at the line the rest of the way to close out the win.
Stonehill (5-7, 4-4 NE10) is back in action on Saturday when it returns home to host Southern Connecticut State University at Merkert Gym at 1:30 p.m. Le Moyne (8-5, 4-3 NE10) hosts Assumption on Saturday at noon.
