Women's Basketball Eases Past Post in Opener, 75-40

Hyslip leads Skyhawks to season-opening win with 19 points

WATERBURY, Conn. (November 11, 2016) – Stonehill College rolled to a season-opening 75-40 victory over Post University in non-conference women's basketball action at the Drubner Center tonight.

Junior Samantha Hyslip (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) led three Stonehill players in double figures with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, converting 3-of-4 free-throws, with seven rebounds and three assists. Junior Elizabeth Grip (Shrewsbury, Massachusetts/Shrewsbury) added 13 points, on 6-of-8 shooting, with a team-high matching eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots, while classmate Courtney Walsh (Windham, New Hampshire/Central Catholic) netted 14 points, aided by 4-of-9 shooting from three-point distance. Junior Kate Ross (Providence, Rhode Island/The Lincoln School) chipped in with nine points, eight boards and two assists.

Stonehill finished shooting 47.5-percent from the field (29-for-61), including 50% (15-30) in the second half. The Skyhawks posted a 46-28 rebounding advantage, resulting in a 21-3 advantage in second chance points. Nyack was limited to 28.8% shooting (17-59) from the floor, including 7-for-30 (23.3%) in the second half.

Senior Shontera Williams (Marksville, Louisiana/Garden City) led Nyack with eight points on 4-of-9 shooting off the bench, while classmate Tyra Jones (Rochester, New York/East) recorded seven points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Stonehill doubled up Post (10-5) over the first five minutes of the game after a jumper from sophomore Nicole Rojas (Cromwell, Connecticut/Cromwell). The Skyhawks took a nine point lead (20-11) into the second quarter after Ross capped the first quarter with a layup.

After Williams opened the second quarter with a basket, Stonehill reeled off 15 straight points to break the game open for a 22-point lead (35-13) when Hyslip made one of two at the line with 3:25 to go in the half. Post scored the final eight points of the half to draw within 14 (35-21) at halftime.

Jones scored the first basket of the second half to pull Post within 12 (35-23), but Stonehill reclaimed its 20 point lead (48-28) after a Rojas three-pointer with 1:54 left in the third, where it would stand entering the fourth. The Skyhawks reeled off a 17-6 run to open a 33-point lead (71-38) following a jumper by freshman Kelsey Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) with 3:45 to play, with the winning margin the largest lead of the night.

Stonehill (1-0, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday for its home and Northeast-10 Conference opener against Assumption College at Merkert Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. Post (0-1, 0-0 CACC) visits Assumption on Sunday at 1 p.m.
