Skyhawks 4x1500-meter relay third, 4x800 sixth for Skyhawks, while Naval takes fifth in triple jump
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 7, 2018) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program capped its weekend competing at the 53rd annual Colonial Relays, hosted by the College of William & Mary, with strong relay performances at Zable Stadium today.
Stonehill's 4x1500-meter relay team took third out of ten entries and was tops among NCAA Division II teams with a time of 16:15.67. Junior All-American Lucas Taxter (Readville, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) ran the lead leg, followed by fellow junior All-American Alexander Demeule (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) for the second leg, and then classmate Christopher Drace (Franklin, New Jersey/Pope John XXIII) ran the third leg before handing the baton to junior Riley Dowd (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorial) for the anchor leg.
Stonehill's 4x800-meter relay team turned in a sixth place finish in 7:58.39 to earn three points for the Skyhawks. Junior All-American Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) ran the lead leg, followed by classmate Matthew Shaw (Goffstown, New Hampshire/Goffstown) and then sophomore Jeremy Breen (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) for the third leg, before junior David Lockhart (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Stoughton) ran the anchor leg.

Stonehill finished fourth in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:29.63 – good for first among non-Division I programs competing in the event. Sophomore Justin Ireland (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) ran the lead leg, before handing the baton to freshman Ethan Famiano (Warwick, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) for the second leg and then senior All-American Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) completed the third leg before junior Joseph Connolly (Wilmington, Massachusetts/Austin Prep) ran the anchor leg for the Skyhawks, who picked up five points in the event.
Senior Jonathan Naval (Stratford, Connecticut/Bunnell) placed fifth in the triple jump championship flight with a distance of 43-feet, 10-inches. He earned four points for the Skyhawks in the team standings with his placement after clearing his longest distance on his third attempt, marking the second-longest triple jump in the NE10 this spring to date.
Stonehill finished the weekend with 22 points to finish 20th in the team standings, which was led by host William & Mary with 74 points, while the University of Rhode Island took second with 63 points. The Skyhawks placed fifth among non-Division I programs competing this weekend.
Stonehill returns to the track next weekend, when it competes at the Silfen Invitational, hosted by Connecticut College, on Friday and Saturday. Stonehill will host its 11th annual Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday, April 28.
