NE10 Track & Field Weekly Report

EASTON, Mass. (February 13, 2018) – Stonehill College junior Xavier Young (Barnegat, New Jersey/Barnegat) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week by the league office today.

Competing in just his fourth collegiate meet, Young broke Stonehill's program record in the shot put at Friday night's Coaches' Tribute Invitational, hosted by the University of Rhode Island. His distance of 49-feet, 7-inches, placed fourth out of 24 throwers competing at the event and broke the previous school record of 49-01.50 by Mason Griffin '16 at the 2015 New England Indoor Track & Field Championships at Boston University.

Young, who recently completed his third season as a starting defensive lineman on Stonehill's football team, has competed in four events in his first season with the track and field program. His school-record throw at URI on Friday is the second-longest shot put distance in the NE10 this season. Young placed fifth with a throw of 48-feet, 8.25-inches in his collegiate debut at the URI Sorlien Invitational back in January. He added a second place finish with a distance of 48-08 at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational, hosted by Tufts University, on January 27, before competing at the New England Championships two weeks ago.

Young has appeared in all 31 games of his collegiate career with the Stonehill football program, starting all ten as a junior this fall. He has totaled 42 tackles (14 solo), including 2.5 tackles for a loss of 13 yards, with a sack for a loss of ten over his football career. Young has been named to the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll three semesters.

Young and his Stonehill teammates will be back in action this weekend at the Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by the Smith College Indoor Track, in Northampton, Massachusetts, on Saturday and Sunday.
