Skyhawks recognized after season-opening UMass Boston Winter Open

EASTON, Mass. (December 6, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's 4x400-meter relay team has been honored with Northeast-10 Conference Relay of the Week accolades after its performance this past weekend.

Stonehill's 4x400 relay placed fourth at Saturday's season-opening University of Massachusetts Boston Winter Open at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center. The Skyhawks posted a time of 3:26.90, with a team consisting of senior Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep), junior Daniel Madsen (West Haven, Connecticut/Notre Dame-West Haven) and freshmen Desmond Bernal (Warwick, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) and Hampton Boyd (Holliston, Massachusetts/Holliston). The team was among ten top five finishes for the Skyhawks at the opening meet of the season.

Hubbell, who also placed sixth out of 52 entries in the long jump (20-03.75) on Saturday, ran the opening leg in 52.2-seconds, followed by Bernal with a 52.3-second split on the second leg, before Boyd completed the third leg in 51.3-seconds and Madsen ran the anchor leg in 50.9-seconds. Boyd also posted a second place finish in the 400-meter dash (50.55) in his collegiate debut, while Madsen finished seventh (51.61) in the field of 58.

Earning a spot on the NE10's weekly honor roll, were senior Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln), who placed third out of 38 entries in the weight throw (52-01.75), junior Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke), who won the 800-meter run (1:55.44) and classmate Joe Connolly (Wilmington, Massachusetts/Austin Prep), who finished fifth in the 60-meter dash (7.04) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.65).

Stonehill is back in action this weekend, having added the Husky Indoor Invitational, hosted by Northeastern University, at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday to the schedule.
