Vercollone leads ten top five finishes for Skyhawks by winning 800-meters
DORCHESTER, Mass. (December 2, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's track & field program turned in ten top five finishes as it opened its indoor track & field schedule at the University of Massachusetts Boston Winter Open, hosted by the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center today.
Junior Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) had a fast start to his season to lead Stonehill's list of top five finishes by winning the 800-meter run in 1:55.44. Sophomore Jeremy Breen (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) finished sixth in the field of 32 runners in 1:59.07, while senior Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) took eighth in 1:59.43.
Freshman Hampton Boyd (Holliston, Massachusetts/Holliston) turned in a second place finish in the 400-meter dash in his collegiate debut, finishing in 50.55-seconds. Junior Daniel Madsen (West Haven, Connecticut/Notre Dame-West Haven) was also in the top ten, placing seventh in the field of 58 in 51.61-seconds.
Junior David Lockhart (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Stoughton) led a pack of four Stonehill runners in the top ten for the one mile run, finishing fourth in 4:29.03. Classmate Matthew Shaw (Goffstown, New Hampshire/Goffstown) placed eighth in 4:32.70, while freshmen Sean Conlan (Melrose, Massachusetts/Melrose) and Christopher Lanahan (Mendham, New Jersey/West Morris-Mendham) took ninth and tenth, respectively. Conlan finished in 4:33.80, while Lanahan posted a time of 4:35.65.
Junior Joe Connolly (Wilmington, Massachusetts/Austin Prep) finished fifth in the 60-meter dash final, placing second among the collegiate runners in the event, in 7.04-seconds. He qualified sixth out of 121 entries for the final with a time of 7.09-seconds, also second among collegiate entries. Sophomore Justin Ireland (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) placed tenth in the prelims with his time of 7.20-seconds, while freshman Desmond Bernal (Warwick, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) was 42nd in 7.48-seconds.
Connolly was also fourth out of 136 competitors in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.65-seconds, while Ireland was seventh in 23.03.
Bernal, Boyd, freshman Ethan Famiano (Warwick, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) and senior Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) also competed as part of Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay, which finished fourth in 3:26.90.

Hubbell also placed sixth out of 52 entries in the long jump by clearing 20-feet, 3.75-inches. Senior Jonathan Naval (Stratford, Connecticut/Bunnell) posted a sixth place finish in the triple jump by clearing a distance of 42-feet, 2.25-inches.
Senior Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) finished third, out of 38 competitors, in the weight throw as he cleared a distance of 52- feet, 1.75-inches.
Other Stonehill Results Include:
Junior Daniel Bomba (Putnam Valley, New York/Iona Prep) and senior Dillon Neumann (Harwinton, Connecticut/Lewis Mills) placed fourth and fifth, respectively in the pole vault. Both cleared 13-feet, 1.5-inches, but Bomba did so on his second attempt, while Neumann needed three tries.
Senior Jordan Sullivan (Sound Beach, New York/Miller Place) placed fifth out of 20 entries in the high jump by clearing a height of 6-feet, 2.75-inches.
Junior Darren Shi (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) finished eighth, out of 59 entries in the shot put, clearing a distance of 42-feet, 7.25-inches.
Seniors Sam Bradford (Bedford, Massachusetts/Bedford) and Alex Southiere (Cumberland, Rhode Island/Cumberland) led four Stonehill runners in the top 11 of the 5000-meter run, placing seventh and eighth, respectively. Bradford posted a time of 15:32.52, while Southiere finished in 15:35.52. Junior John Onken (Holbrook, New York/Sachem North) finished tenth in 15:39.08, while freshman Jeffrey Pichie (Burrillville, Rhode Island/Burrillville) was 11th in 15:43.09.
Freshman Collin Kuchachik (Orange, Connecticut/Amity Regional) finished sixth in the 60-meter high hurdles final in 8.86-seconds, after qualifying sixth, out of 34 entries, in 8.90-seconds.
Stonehill will return to action after the New Year following a break for exams and the holidays, when it competes at the Beantown Challenge, hosted by Harvard University, at Gordon Indoor Track, on Saturday, January 13, at 11 a.m.
