Santo and Vercollone Post PRs at Larry Ellis Invitational


Santo shaved 21 seconds off his personal best in the 5000-meter run tonight.

PRINCETON, N.J. (April 21, 2017) – Stonehill College senior Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) and sophomore Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) both notched personal bests while competing at the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted by Princeton University, at Weaver Stadium tonight.

Santo ran the 5000-meter run in a personal-best time of 14:41.16 – besting his previous best by 21-seconds and finishing within four seconds of the program record. He placed 34th in the field of 63 entries in the event, including seventh among Division II and III runners and was the lone Northeast-10 Conference entrant. Santo ran steady 1:08 and 1:09 laps before posting a quick 400-meters of 1:06.80 for the 2200-meter split. The halfway lap slowed to a 1:15.48 split, before posting steady laps averaging 1:11 until closing with a final lap of 1:09.60.

Vercollone recorded a personal-best time of 1:53.07 in the 800-meter run to finish 39th out of 60 runners in the event. He placed fourth in his section, running a 55.70-second split over the first 400-meters and then closing in 57.38-seconds. Vercollone finished fourth among Division II and III entries in the event and second among NE10 entries behind just Franklin Pierce University junior Dage Minors.

The remainder of Stonehill's team will be in action tomorrow at the Holy Cross Invitational in Worcester, Massachusetts, at 10 a.m. Stonehill, which is host of the 2017 NE10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 5-6, will host its Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday, April 29, starting at 10:30 p.m.
