Men’s Track & Field Set To Compete At The New England Championships


Junior Joe Santo will look to build off of his All-NE-10 performance from last week at Saturday's New England Championships.

Skyhawks ranked fifth in East Region

EASTON, Mass. (February 25, 2016) – The Stonehill College men's track & field team, ranked No. 5 in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II East Regional Computer Rankings have qualified for the 48th New England – NEICAAA Indoor Track and Field Championship and will be headed to Boston University to compete on Saturday.

Stonehill will be competing against other qualifying schools throughout New England from Divisions I, II, and III. Last year the team completed a 20th place finish out of 50 and are aiming to reach another impressive finish this year.

Freshman Joe Connolly (Wilmington, Massachusetts/Austin Prep) will be competing in the 200-meter dash, qualifying for the New England Championships with his personal-best time of 22.32-seconds. He is seeded 15th in the competition and has the eighth fastest time within the Northeast-10 Conference.

Freshman Stephen Vercollone (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) also qualified for the New England Championships in the 800-meter run with his personal best time of 1:54.93 during the NE-10 championships. He is seeded 19th while sophomore Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) will also be competing in the 800-meter run seeded right behind Vercollone at 20th with his time of 1:55.01.

Senior Robert Massey (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) is seeded 11th in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:29.28, the third fastest time run in the NE-10 which he set at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational. Freshman Lawrence Carney (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) will be competing in the 3000-meter run as well and is seeded 29th in competition with a time of 8:29.28.

Junior Antonio Xelhua (Arlington, Massachusetts/Arlington) with his best time of 15:31.01 is set to compete in the 5000-meter run, along with classmate Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) with a time of 15:06.13. Santo and Xelhua are seeded 15th and 27th respectively.

The Men's Track and Field Team will be competing in the 4x800 relay, 4x400 relay, as well as the Distance Medley Relay. For the 4x800 the team is seeded 12th with a time of 7:52.48. The team running the 4x400 is seeded 26th with a time of 3:26.48 and The Distance Medley Run team secured the 16th seed with their time of 10:22.19.

Senior Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Massachusetts/Wellesley) will be competing in the shot put, qualifying with a distance of 49-feet, while Sophomore Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) will be competing in the weight throw with a distance of 51-feet, 8.50-inches. For the men's pole vault, sophomore Anthony Innamorati (Clinton, Massachusetts/Clinton) will is seeded 20th, clearing a height of 14-feet, 9-inches.
