Zawalich and Kirkpatrick post NCAA provisional qualifying times for Skyhawks
KINGSTON, R.I. (February 7, 2015) – The Stonehill College men's track & field program, ranked fourth in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional rankings, turned in a fifth place team finish at the URI Coaches' Tribute Meet, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, at Mackal Fieldhouse today.
Stonehill compiled 54 points to finish fifth in the team standings of which there were just two non-Division I programs competing. Host Rhode Island won the men's team competition with 180.50 points, followed by Brown University with 140 points. The University of New Hampshire and fellow Northeast-10 Conference member American International College tied for third place with 78 points apiece. The Skyhawks finished ahead of Central Connecticut State University (51.50 points), Providence College (40), University of Massachusetts (20) and Bryant University (18).
Senior All-American Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Massachusetts/St. John's of Shrewsbury) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships next month in Birmingham, Alabama, with his second place finish in the one mile run in 4:11.29. His adjusted time of 4:08.13 for the flat track the teams ran on today ranks fifth fastest in Division II this winter.
Junior All-American Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Indiana/Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 800-meter run by winning the event in 1:55.25. His converted time of 1:53.63 for a flat track ranks 25th nationally in Division II. Zawalich finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:57.04.
Kirkpatrick also ran the second leg of Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay team which finished fourth in 3:30.18. Freshman Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) and sophomores Stephen Bomba (Putnam Valley, New York/Iona Prep) and Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) also ran legs for the Skyhawks.

Dimmick also placed seventh out of 15 entries in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:36.03. Burleigh finished seventh out of 17 runners in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:07.30.
Freshman Josh Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/ St. John's Prep) placed third in the long jump with a distance of 21-feet, 3.25-inches. Classmate Jon Naval (Stratford, Connecticut/Bunnell) finished sixth out of 21 entries at 20-09.75. Naval was also 11th in the triple jump with a leap of 43-05.25.
Sophomore Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) led five Stonehill runners in the top 11 and eight Skyhawks in the field of 19 overall for the 3000-meter run with a fifth place finish in 8:52.10. Freshman Antonio Xelhua (Arlington, Massachusetts/Arlington) finished seventh in 8:56.15, while senior Daniel Gordon (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) took ninth in 8:57.91, sophomore Daniel Nolan (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) was tenth (9:02.27) and freshman Ken Vinacco (Scituate, Rhode Island/Scituate) was 11th (9:05.26).

Senior Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Arizona/Shadow Mountain) finished fifth out of 22 entries in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.79-seconds. Freshman Ruddy Severino (Methuen, Massachusetts/Methuen) placed tenth in 23.23-seconds, while classmate Patrick Ahern (Charlotte, North Carolina/Providence Country Day) was 12th in 23.51.

Grubel also placed 12th out of 34 entries in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.30-seconds in the preliminary heats. Freshmen Daniel Stone (Potsdam, New York/Potsdam) and Patrick Ahern (Charlotte, North Carolina/Providence Country Day) ran 20th and 21st, respectively, in 7.48 and 7.50-seconds. Stone was also 15th in the 200-meter dash in 23.82-seconds.
Senior Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Massachusetts/Methuen) placed seventh out of 30 entries in the weight throw with a distance of 51-feet, 7.75-inches. Junior Morgan Johnson (West Newbury, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) finished ninth at 51-00.75, while freshman Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) was 13th at 47-11.25.
Junior Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Massachusetts/Wellesley) finished tenth in the shot put with a distance of 45-feet, 10-inches.
Freshman Anthony Innamorati (Clinton, Massachusetts/Clinton) placed tenth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 13-feet, 3.50-inches.
Freshman Mark Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) finished 13th in the 60-meter high hurdles prelims with a time of 9.08-seconds. He also placed 20th in the 200-meter dash in 24.45-seconds and seventh in the high jump with a leap of 6-00.50.
Stonehill is back in action next Saturday when it participates in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University, at 9 a.m.
