Middle distance runners and throwers lead Skyhawks in indoor opener
BOSTON, Mass. (December 7, 2014) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program opened its 2014-15 indoor season by competing at the Third Annual University of Massachusetts Boston Open Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on Saturday.
Stonehill got strong performances by a number of freshmen in the first collegiate meet, while the Skyhawks middle distance runners and throwers stood out with winning performances.
Senior All-American Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, New York/Archbishop Molloy) won the one mile run with a time of 4:20.85, followed by junior All-American Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Indiana/Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) in 4:21.54 to complete a Stonehill sweep of the top two spots in the event. The Skyhawks also placed three runners in the top four and four inside the top ten for the event. Freshman Sam Bradford (Bedford, Massachusetts/Bedford) took fourth place in 4:26.28, while classmate James Murphy (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) placed ninth in 4:32.1.

Sophomore Carmen Cilfone (Falmouth, Massachusetts/Falmouth) placed fifth with a throw of 44-01.25, while senior Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Massachusetts/Methuen) took seventh with a distance of 44-00.00.
Junior Morgan Johnson (West Newbury, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) placed third in the weight throw with a distance of 50-feet, 6.25-inches. Freshman Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) was fourth in his collegiate debut with a throw of 50-02.50, while Cormier placed sixth by clearing 49-01.75. Griffin placed 15th at 38-04.00.

Freshman Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) earned an event win in his collegiate debut, taking the 800-meter run in 2:00.69. Sophomore Steven Bomba (Putnam Valley, New York/Iona Prep) finished eighth in 2:05.81.
Freshman Dillon Neumann (Harwinton, Connecticut/Lewis Mills) placed second in the pole vault in his first collegiate meet by clearing a height of 13-feet, 5.25-inches. Classmate Anthony Innamorati (Clinton, Massachusetts/Clinton) was fourth with a height of 12-11.50.
Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay team finished third out of 22 teams with a time of 3:33.55. Running for the Skyhawks were freshmen Brendan Polichronopoulos (Penacook, New Hampshire/Merrimack Valley), Joshua Hubbell (Gloucester, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep), Patrick Ahern (Charlotte, North Carolina/Providence Day School) and Ruddy Severino (Methuen, Massachusetts/Methuen).
Polichronopoulos also posted an eighth place finish in the 500-meter dash in his collegiate debut with a time of 1:09.65.
Senior Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Arizona/Shadow Mountain) finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.16-seconds. Classmate Robert Smith (Woburn, Massachusetts/Woburn Memorial) placed eighth in 23.16-seconds. Grubel also finished 12th in the 60-meter dash prelims in 7.22-seconds, while Smith finished 18th in 7.26.
Smith followed with a fourth place finish in the 400-meter dash in 50.82-seconds to finish second among collegiate runners in the event. Grubel followed with a seventh place finish in 51.98.
Freshman Jon Naval (Stratford, Connecticut/Bunnell) was fourth in the triple jump in his collegiate debut with a distance of 42-feet, 0.75-inches, while classmate Jason Lambrou (Cumberland, Rhode Island/Cumberland) was sixth by clearing 40-08.75.
Freshman Mark Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) placed ninth in the long jump in his first collegiate meet with a distance of 20-feet, 5.25-inches. Naval was 11th at 20-01.50 and Lambrou was 17th out of 24 entries with a leap of 19-06.00.

Other Highlights Include:
Senior All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Massachusetts/BC High) placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 6-feet, 4.75-inches. Freshman Tyler Gomes (Medford, Massachusetts/BC High) was seventh by clearing 6-2.75 in his collegiate debut.
Freshman Alex Southiere (Cumberland, Rhode Island/Cumberland) finished eighth in the 3000-meter run in his first collegiate meet with a time of 9:19.44.
Sophomore Antonio Xelhua (Arlington, Massachusetts/Arlington) finished eighth in the 5000-meter run in 15:56.08. Classmate Adam Rego (Rumford, Rhode Island/LaSalle Academy) and senior Seamus McEvoy (Longmeadow, Massachusetts/Longmeadow) took 16th and 17th, respectively, out of 42 entries in 16:17.29 and 16:18.19.
Stonehill has one more meet before the holiday break when it competes at the Jay Carisella Invitational, hosted by Northeastern University, right back at the Reggie Lewis Center next Saturday.
