Senior All-American now a 12-time All-Region honoree with his two outdoor awards

EASTON, Mass. (May 24, 2013) – Senior All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) headlines a list of 14 All-East Region performers for the Stonehill College men's track & field program the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced this week. The awards recognize each region's top five performers in individual events and top three teams in relay events.

Thomas, who earns All-East Region honors in two events for the third straight outdoor season since the USTFCCCA began issuing All-Region status, collects the honors for both the high jump and 110-meter high hurdles, giving him six career outdoor All-Region awards and 12 overall, including indoor honors. He has qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, being held in Pueblo, Colo., this weekend for both events as he seeks his ninth and tenth career All-America honors.

Thomas' All-Region performances came with his NCAA qualifying and school-record time of 14.24-seconds in the preliminary round of the New England Championships, held at Stonehill's W.B. Mason Stadium, on his way to a second career New England title for the event. He also won the high jump at the Duke Invitational in April with his season-best leap of 6-feet, 10.25-inches. In addition to his New England championship in the hurdles, Thomas won the NE-10 title and earned All-New England honors for the high jump.

Among Stonehill's 14 All-East Region honorees, nine are repeat performers from previous indoor or outdoor seasons or both. Junior Xavier Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) follows Thomas among repeat honorees with six total All-Region performances, including all three outdoor seasons in the 110-meter hurdles. Senior captain Ethan Penney (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) is a five-time outdoor All-Region performer with his honors in the 3000-meter steeplechase for the third-straight year, while sophomore All-American Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's of Shrewsbury) has also earned five All-East awards in just two seasons, with his first outdoor honor for the 1500-meter run.

Four-time All-East Region honorees include senior pole vaulters Luke Byrnes (Glen Head, N.Y./Chaminade) and Kevin McCann (Monroe, Conn./Masuk), junior Herby Saintil (Roslindale, Mass./BC High) with his second-straight outdoor triple jump performance, sophomore thrower Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) with his second-straight outdoor shot put award, sophomore All-America Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) with his second-straight outdoor 800-meter run honor and sophomore All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) with his fourth high jump All-Region effort heading into today's National Championships.

Senior John Gelcius (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) concludes his career with his third-straight All-East Region award for the javelin despite competing in just the final three events of the season, including an All-New England performance at the New England Championships, due to injury.
