Stonehill Sits Third After Day 2 of New England Championships


Sophomore Bryan Wilcox finished second in the 10,000-meter run to earn All-New England honors for the first time.

Wilcox and Gelcius lead five All-New England performances for Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (May 10, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked third in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional rankings, sits in third place in the team standings after collecting five All-New England performances on day two of the 2013 New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships at W.B. Mason Stadium today.

Stonehill collected 19 points today, while Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State University leads the team race with 48 points, with Northeastern University right behind with 46 through seven events. Tufts University (14 points) and Boston College (11) round out the top five in the team standings.

Stonehill posted a pair of first time All-New England performances in the 10,000-meter run. Sophomore Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington), who won the NE-10 Championship for this event last weekend, was in the lead pack all race and ended up second in with a time of 32:02.05 after event winner Stephen Wahome of Bridgewater State University (31:56.89) pulled away on the last lap. Junior Stephen Leonard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) collected his first All-New England honors with his seventh place finish in 32:44.68, while sophomore Michael Gendron (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) placed 13th in 34:26.20.


Senior John Gelcius earned All-New England honors for the second straight year with his fifth place finish in the javelin.

Senior John Gelcius (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) earned All-New England honors for the second-straight year in the javelin throw as he placed fourth with a distance of 184-feet, 5-inches.

Junior Paul Cina (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) earned a point for Stonehill with his eighth place finish to earn outdoor All-New England honors for the first time (third overall) in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:55.01. Classmate Trent Fontanella (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Guertin) finished 14th in 15:16.00, while senior Ethan Penney (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) placed 17th in 15:22.26.

Junior Alex Willgoos (Newington, Conn./Newington) earned All-New England honors for the first time by finishing fifth in the decathlon with 5,523 points. In addition to a third place finish in the long jump (19-06.75) and fourth place efforts for both the 100-meter dash (11.67) and high jump (5-10.00) on Friday, he added a fourth place finish in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.31-seconds (592 points) and fourth place showing in the pole vault with a height of 12-feet, 1.50-inches (535) today. Willgoos also placed eighth in the discus throw (93-feet, 6-inches/435 pts), sixth in the javelin throw (127-03/424) and eighth in the 1500-meter run (5:13.84/483).


Senior All-American Corey Thomas broke his own school and facility records to qualify first for tomorrow's 110-meter hurdles final.

Senior All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) and junior Xavier Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) qualified first and second for tomorrow's 110-meter high hurdles final. Thomas broke his own school and facility records with an NCAA Division II Championships provisional qualifying time of 14.24-seconds, while Dixon posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14.51 to win his heat. Thomas broke his own school record of 14.31-seconds set at the 2011 New England Championships at Southern Connecticut State and eclipsed his own facility mark of 14.32 set at the 2010 Northeast-10 Championships. He currently ranks 17th nationally for the event, while Dixon is 34th.

Senior Luke Byrnes (Glen Head, N.Y./Chaminade) finished 13th in the pole vault as he cleared 14-feet, 9-inches.

Stonehill is serving as host of the New England Championships for the first time and the event wraps up with Saturday's schedule beginning at 10 a.m. Day two of the heptathlon will get the day started with the women's discus throw and unseeded 3000-meter steeplechase section getting the remainder of events started at noon.
