Skyhawks record five event wins to highlight spring opener
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (March 23, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's track and field program opened its outdoor season with five event wins and a strong afternoon in field events at the Bridgewater State University Bears Invitational at Edward C. Swenson Athletic Field Complex today.
Sophomore All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) won the high jump with a height of 6-feet, 7.50-inches, just 1.25-inches shy of the NCAA Championship provisional qualifying standard.
Junior Ryan Perkins (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's of Shrewsbury) won the pole vault by clearing 12-feet, 3.50-inches, while classmate Xavier Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) won the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.21-seconds.
Sophomore Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:32.11, while classmate Michael Gendron (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) finished fourth in 33:45.16.
Junior Herby Saintil (Roslindale, Mass./BC High) won the triple jump with a distance of 44-feet, 6.25-inches. He led three Stonehill jumpers in the top seven as freshman Fortune Kalala (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) placed fifth with a leap of 40-07.00 and junior George Georgaklis (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) finished seventh at 39-07.25.

Senior Timothy Johnson (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) led an army of Stonehill entries in the 1500-meter runs as he finished second (out of 49 entries) with his time of 4:01.85. Ten Skyhawks in all were entered in the event and all finished inside the top 21. Senior Sam Spencer (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) placed fourth in 4:07.61, while senior All-American Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) was fifth in 4:08.8. Sophomore All-American Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) rounded out the top ten finishers for the Skyhawks with a ninth place showing in 4:09.43.
Hanlon, Johnson and Spencer also posted high finishes in the 800-meter run. Hanlon led three Stonehill runners in the top 12 (out of 35) with a seventh place finish in 2:03.17, while Johnson finished ninth in 2:04.19 and Spencer was 12th in 2:04.70.
Sophomore All-American Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's of Shrewsbury) led six Stonehill runners, including three in the top seven, of the 5000-meter run with a second place finish in 15:19.39. Classmate Daniel Gordon (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) was fifth in 15:34.03, while junior Stephen Leonard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) placed seventh in 15:39.69.
Senior Colin Prior (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) led three Stonehill jumpers in the top seven of the long jump with a third place finish on a distance of 19-feet, 5.50-inches. Freshman Justin Howard-Callender (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) placed fifth with a leap of 19-02.75, while sophomore Robert Smith (Woburn, Mass./Woburn Memorial) finished seventh at 19-01.50.
Sophomore Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) placed third for the shot put with his distance of 45-feet, 2.50-inches. Freshman Andrew Hastings (Broad Brook, Conn./Hebron Academy) finished 12th with a throw of 38-04.25. Cormier also placed sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 130-feet, 7-inches, while Hastings was also eighth for the discus throw with his distance of 115-feet, 10-inches.
Other Stonehill Highlights Include:
Junior Tyler Moules (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.14-seconds.
Sophomores Robert Smith and Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) ran seventh and eighth, respectively, out of 49 entries in the 200-meter dash. Smith was seventh in 23.75-seconds, while Grubel took eighth in 23.76. Grubel also finished eighth (out of 35) in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.19-seconds.
Junior Michael Harris (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) placed 12th (out of 49 sprinters) in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.52-seconds.
Stonehill is back in action in two weeks when it competes at the Duke University Invitational in Durham, N.C., on Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6.
