Softball Takes Two Against Pitt-Johnstown, St. Thomas Aquinas

J Hartman tallied three doubles in game one

AUBURNDALE, Florida (March 9, 2020) – The Stonehill College softball team improved its record to 4-2 overall as it won 5-2 against the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown and blanked St. Thomas Aquinas, 4-0, Monday in Florida.

Pitt-Johnstown's Olivia Porter sent a long ball over the fence for a homerun to kick off the bottom of the first, 1-0. Stonehill tied the game in the top of the fourth as Caroline Casey flew out to right field with runners on second and third, but only scoring one, 1-1.

The Mountain Cats added a run in the bottom of the frame, as Taylor Mendicino reached on an error and Bree Ginther scored from third for their second lead of the game, 2-1.

Stonehill broke open the game in the top of the fifth with three runs off three hits. With two outs and a runner on second, G Hartman singled scoring Alexa Adinolfi. Theilgard and J Hartman connected with back-to-back doubles for the Skyhawks first lead of the game, 5-2.

Rayner threw a two-hitter, as she allowed those two hits in the top of the fourth inning. She stranded them as she retired the side with a ground out.

Stonehill put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third, as Bennett reached on a fielder's choice bunt, scoring Hannah Tran from third. Theilgard then reached on an error with Bennett on second, extending their lead to two, 2-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, with one out and runners on first and third, Bennett grounded out to second base scoring Hannah Ricker from third, 3-0. The Skyhawks added one more run in the bottom of the sixth on another error for a 4-0 lead. This was Stonehill's first shutout of the season and first since last season when the Skyhawks saw four shutouts.

Up Next:

Stonehill will compete against the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday, March 10 with a start time of 1:30 p.m. and follow that up with a game against Trevecca Nazarene with a first pitch slated for 3:45 p.m.
