Softball Tops Holy Family, Falls to West Virginia Wesleyan

Rayner recorded a career high 11 strikeouts against Holy Family

AUBURNDALE, Florida (March 7, 2020) – The Stonehill College softball team split their second doubleheader of the season as they defeated Holy Family University, 4-1, and then came up short against West Virginia Wesleyan University, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon.

Stonehill recorded its second win of the season with a 4-1 victory over Holy Family University, as Rayner led the way with 7.0 innings of work, allowing only four hits, and striking out a career best 11 batters in her second win of the season.

J Hartman launched a two-run homerun with two outs in the top of the first for her second homerun of the season and eighth of her career, putting Stonehill up 2-0. The Skyhawks extended their lead on a two-out RBI single from Maille Bennett, driving in Theilgard from second, 3-0, in the top of the third inning.

In the bottom of the sixth with no outs, Tyler Beccari cut the deficit to two, 3-1, with a solo shot with no outs. The Skyhawks picked that run back up in the top of the seventh with Casey's second homerun of the season and fourth of her career with one out, 4-1. Rayner held on for the win with two of her 11 strikeouts in the bottom of the frame to retire the side.

The Lady Cat's Hannah Hudson threw a complete 7.0 innings as she allowed five hits with one earned run and three strikeouts against the Skyhawks. West Virginia Wesleyan saw back-to-back singles in the top of the first inning, but Stonehill's defense stood true leaving two runners on base. Stonehill tallied their first hit in the bottom of the second and they stranded two runners in scoring position.

West Virginia Wesleyan rallied in the top of the fifth inning with one out as two runs crossed the plate on back-to-back singles. Stonehill got the second out on a fly out to left field, and then an error and a double brought home two more runs for a 4-0 advantage.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Ricker singled and drove in the Skyhawks' lone run with the bases loaded. The Lady Cats got out of the jam with a fly out and a ground out to end the inning. West Virginia Wesleyan tallied two hits in the sixth, but the Skyhawks kept those two runs from scoring as both sides were retired in the seventh.

Stonehill will take a day off before continuing their spring break trip and pick up on Monday, March 9 to battle the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown at 10:00 a.m. and Saint Thomas Aquinas College at noon at the Auburndale Sports Complex.
