Assumption Takes Two from Softball

EASTON, Massachusetts (April 9, 2019) – The Stonehill College softball team fell to Assumption College with scores of 12-0 in five innings for the final game of the three-game series and 8-6 for the second game of the doubleheader on Tuesday at Fr. Gartland Field.

With the sweep, Stonehill is now 7-18 overall and 4-10 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while Assumption improves to 18-11 overall and 11-5 in NE10 play.

Game 1: Stonehill 0 – Assumption 12 (5 innings)

The Greyhounds saw pitcher Mia Nowicki toss a no-hitter striking out five batters in her 11th win of the season.

In the top of the second with two outs Caitlin Mirabell doubled to center field and Mckenzie Richards drove her in with single to center field for a 1-0 lead. Katherine Rayner retired the side with a line out to end the inning.

The third inning saw the Greyhounds leave a runner on base as Alyssa Beaton singled to left center but was out on the grounder to second base for the third out. Nowicki retired the side for the third-straight inning.

Victoria Petrie led off the top of the fourth with a single to center field and Alyssa Bialakis drove one over the left center fence for a two run shot to extend their lead to three, 3-0. With two outs and runners on first and second, the Greyhounds tallied two doubles and a single to bring home four more runs to open up the game 7-0.

Assumption held on to the lead through the fifth as Beaton launched a three-run homerun to center field with two outs for a 10-0 advantage. With the bases cleared, Kayla Peabody doubled to left center and Petrie reached first on an error to bring in Peabody for the 12th run of the game.

Game 2: Stonehill 6 – Assumption 8

Stonehill took the first lead of the second game as Sophie Perez singled and Genna Hartman scored on an error by the outfield for the first run in the bottom of the first. Julia Perrone  followed with a drive up the middle bringing home Perez for a 2-0 lead.

The Greyhounds mirrored the Skyhawks half inning as Bialakis launched her second homerun of the game to tie the game at two, 2-2, in the top of the second. Stonehill totaled three hits in the bottom of the frame scoring four runs for their most runs in an inning all season to take back the lead, 6-2.

Assumption was not going to go down without a fight putting three more runs across in the top of the third with four-straight hits including three singles and a double cutting the deficit to one, 6-5. Erin Barry came into pitch for the Greyhounds in the bottom of the third and she retired eight-straight batters fencing off the Skyhawks in the 4.0 innings she pitched.

Assumption saw Marissa Doherty double to right center driving in the game-tying run, 6-6, with two outs in the top of the fourth. The Greyhounds' bats were silenced through the sixth inning and in the seventh Beaton recorded her second RBI of the game and Bialakis saw her third to take their first lead of the game, 8-6, for the go-ahead runs.

Stonehill will travel to Waltham, Massachusetts for their third game of the series against Bentley University on Thursday, April 11 with a first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
