Softball Earns Third Shutout of Season With 1-0 Win Over Assumption

Peterson records only RBI with bottom of the seventh sacrifice bunt

EASTON, Mass. (April 11, 2017) – The Stonehill College softball team earned its third shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over Assumption College on Tuesday afternoon on Fr. Gartland Field.

For Stonehill, Olivia Peterson (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) recorded the only RBI for the Skyhawks on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt that scored Katherine Rayner (Milton, Vermont/Milton) form third. Taylor Lester (East Northport, New York/St. Anthony's), Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's), Erin Brayden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), Sophie Perez (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) and Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) tallied the five hits.

Squeri gave up three hits and struck out four in her second shutout victory of the season

The Greyhounds registered two hits in the top of the first inning as Caitlin Mirabell singled to left field and Ashley Abad doubled to right center, but Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) retired the side with a strikeout and a ground out.

Assumption left another two runners on base in the top of the second, as Cassie Schultz and Cassidy Colby reached first and second. Stonehill got its first runner on base in the bottom of the second with a leadoff walk from Squeri.

In the bottom of the sixth, Lester led off with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Carbone. With one out, Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph By the Sea) grounded out to second base but moved Lester up to third. The Greyhounds' Kendal Roy wrapped up the inning with a ground out by Squeri, leaving Lester on third.

Squeri held the Greyhounds to no hits and one left on base in the top of the seventh, as the Skyhawks would get one last chance to string together hits.

Brayden drove the ball up the middle for the first hit in the bottom of the seventh and Rayner pinch ran for her. Perez moved Rayner over to second on a sacrifice bunt to put only one out on the board. Rennie hit a hard grounder back to the pitcher, reaching first on the hit and advancing Rayner to third. Rennie stole second on a first and third situation, before Julia Hartman (Salisbury, Massachusetts/Triton Regional) walked with only one out for the Skyhawks. With lefty Peterson up and bases loaded, she bunted the ball to the left side of the field and Rayner slid home in time before the Greyhounds could get the tag on the runner, securing the win for the Skyhawks, 1-0.

Softball (7-21, 5-6 NE10) travels to Southern Hampshire University on Saturday, April 15 for a doubleheader with a first pitch slated at noon.
