Softball Sweeps Franklin Pierce in Doubleheader

Perez and Rennie record their first-career homeruns

EASTON, Mass. (April 3, 2017) – The Stonehill College softball team swept Franklin Pierce University for its first Northeast-10 Conference wins of the season, 8-0 in five innings and 6-1, Monday afternoon at Fr. Gartland Field.

Game 1: Stonehill 8 – Franklin Pierce 0 (5 innings)

Squeri earns her first victory of the season, taking game two 

Jennifer Mayette (Scotia, New York/Scotia-Glenville) pitched all five innings and allowed only two hits and struck out four batters. Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) batted 2-for-3 with two RBi and a run scored, while Carly Rennis (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a double.

Stonehill got on board early in the bottom of the first with two runs as Taylor Lester (East Northport, New York/St. Anthony's) reached on an error and advanced to second. Erin Brayden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) advanced Lester and Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) to third and second, respectively as Squeri grounded out to second scoring Lester. With two outs, Rennie reached on an error by the shortstop and Carbone scored putting two runs on the board for the Skyhawks, 2-0.

The Skyhawks had a big inning in the bottom of the second, as four hits drove in five runs. Stonehill had two outs and rallied as Lester reached first on an error by the shortstop and stole second. Carbone followed with a walk, as Brayden singled up the middle driving in Lester from second base. Squeri also singled up the middle tallying an RBI as Carbone scored from second. Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph By the Sea) drove in Brayden from second for the third-straight hit from the Skyhawks. Squeri then scored on an illegal pitch and Rennie drove in Jordan from second, on a double to left center, putting the Skyhawks up 7-0.

Mayette holds off the Ravens in the top of the third with a fly out, a strike out and a ground out. The Skyhawks scored its eighth run in the bottom of the third, as Perez scored from third on an error by the catcher after advancing on illegal pitches.

Franklin Pierce left two runners on base in the top of the fourth as Mayette got out of a jam with a ground out leaving runners on first and second. She finished the game with three-straight ground outs in the top of the fifth, earning her first victory of the season.

Game 2: Stonehill  6 – Franklin Pierce 1

Neither team was able to score in the first two innings, but Stonehill connected on two hits and Franklin Pierce tallied three hits.

The Ravens earned a 1-0 lead, as Dom Bisaccia blasted a solo homerun to left center with one out in the top of the third. Stonehill was unsuccessful in the bottom of the third, as the Skyhawks left Olivia Peterson (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) on second.

Stonehill fought back in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the Skyhawks connected on three hits, scoring four runs. With one out Jordan reached on a fielder's choice and Rennie followed up with a two-run homerun, her first collegiate blast, putting Stonehill up 2-1. With two outs, Lester singled up the middle scoring Peterson and Caroline Casey (East Moriches, New York/Center Moriches) on the throw from the outfield, extending their lead to three, 4-1.

Squeri held the Ravens to one hit in the top of the sixth, as the Skyhawks scored two more runs in the bottom of the frame off of three hits. Sophie Perez (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) launched her first career homerun over the left center fence, 5-1. Lester drove the ball to center field as the Ravens made an error, advancing her to second. Carbone followed with a double to the same spot, advancing Lester to third and later scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield, 6-1.

Squeri finished the game with a ground out and two pop ups to shortstop for her first victory of the season, 6-1.

Softball (3-16, 2-2 NE10) travels to Assumption College on Wednesday, April 5 for a doubleheader for a first pitch at 3:00 p.m.
