Stonehill falls to third ranked team this season
CLERMONT, Fla. (March 8, 2017) - The Stonehill College softball team fought back from 4-1 deficit, but wasn't enough as Wilmington (Delaware) University held the Skyhawks to two runs in the bottom of the seventh, 4-3. In the Skyhawks' second game, No. 13 West Virginia Wesleyan College tallied nine hits for a 7-0 victory over Stonehill on Wednesday, March 8 in Clermont, Florida.
Game 1: Wilmington (Del.) 4 – Stonehill 3
Stonehill's Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) went 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Carly Rennie (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) batted 1-for-2 with the other RBI.

On the mound, Jennifer Mayette (Scotia, New York/Scotia-Glenville) held the Wildcats to no runs in five innings, while Caitlyn Whiteside contained the Skyhawks to no runs in five innings as well.
In the top of the sixth, Wilmington was able to string together three hits as Whitney DeMora doubled down the left field line, Becca Stanley bunted to third base and Colby Wyatt singled up the middle scoring DeMora and Stanley with one out for a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth.
Stonehill responded in the bottom of the inning, as the Wildcats got two outs and three Skyhawks singled back-to-back. Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) singled to right field, Erin Brayden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) sent one down the left field line and Rennie reached first with a rocked to right field scoring Squeri, cutting the lead to one, 2-1.
The Wildcats continued pressuring at the plate as three more hits drove in two runs in the top of the seventh extending the lead to three, 4-1.
The Skyhawks battled in the bottom of the seventh, rallying with two outs, as Taylor Lester (East Northport, New York/St. Anthony's) reached on a fielder's choice and Perez singled to right field. Carbone stepped up to the plate and singled up the middle, driving in Lester and Perez in to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. The Wildcats closed the game with a fly out to centerfield from Brayden to secure the victory.
Game 2: No. 13 West Virginia Wesleyan College 7 – Stonehill 0
The Skyhawks' Lester and Brayden both batted 2-for-3 in the afternoon game.
The Bobcats attacked early and often through the entire game as their defense held the Skyhawks to no runs and only four hits. West Virginia's Tori Pouge reached first on a bunt and stole second before Olivia Gore walked, to give the Bobcats runners on first and second. Morgan Bruce followed the two with a single to right field scoring Pouge Allison Robinson came after Bruce with another single to center field, driving home Gore for a 2-0 lead.
West Virginia added three more runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the third off three hits. Robinson's hit to third caused Gore to score from second and Bruce to advance to second. Robinson and Bruce then advanced on a wild pitch, as Bruce scored the fourth run of the game. Aylin Gutiernez then singled to center field with two outs scoring Robinson from third for a 5-0 advantage.
Lester tallied Stonehill's first hit of the game in the top of the fourth singling to left field, but was doubled out off of Lianna Jordan's (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph By the Sea) line drive to first base.
In the bottom of the fourth, West Virginia continued using its offense, as Robinson doubled to right field, as both Pogue and Brooklyn Waddell scored on throw from the outfield, extending its lead to 7-0.
Stonehill stayed alive as Katherine Rayner (Milton, Vermont/Milton) got the Bobcats to pop up three-straight times in the bottom off the fifth, giving the Skyhawks two more innings to battle.
West Virginia's Hannah Vet only allowed two hits in the sixth and seventh innings, closing out the game with a 7-0 shutout victory.
Softball (1-10) faces University of Bridgeport and Georgian Court University in a 1:00 p.m. and a 6:00 p.m. contest, respectively, tomorrow March 9 at Sleepy Hollow Complex.
