Winona State Powers Past Softball in Doubleheader

Skyhawks tally five hits in twin bill

LEESBURG, Fla. (March 6, 2017) - The Stonehill College softball team was unable to connect hits to score runs in either games, as Winona State University run ruled the Skyhawks 8-0 in both games Monday afternoon at the Sleepy Hollow Complex.
Game 1: Stonehill 0 – Winona State 8 (5 innings)

Julia Hartman (Salisbury, Massachusetts/Triton Regional) registered the only hit for the Skyhawks in game one, as the Warriors only registered one strikeout on Stonehill.

Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the second when Lanl Van Zyl homered to left field for either teams' first hit of the game.

Stonehill picked up its first hit, as Hartman singled to left field and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder.

Winona State connected in the bottom of the third as the Warriors strung together two hits and the Skyhawks totaled two errors, for three runs, extending its lead to 4-0.

The Warriors shut down the Skyhawks in the top of the fourth and the top of the fifth, as Winona was able to capitalize on four hits in the bottom of the fourth. This included a homerun to center field from Shaye Witte, a single from Samantha McLean that scored Jamee Schleis from third and a double to left field from Paige Keegan that scored McLean and Megan McCabe, extending its lead to eight, 8-0.

Game 2: Stonehill 0 – Winona State 8 (5 innings)

The Skyhawks were able to see Taylor Lester (East Northport, New York/St. Albany's), Carbone (Deer Park, New Work/St. Anthony's), Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) and Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph by the Sea) each recorded on hit in the five-inning game.

Once again, Winona State got on board in the first inning, as Alison Nowak doubled to left field scoring McLean and Larsen for a 2-0 lead.

Carbone tallied the Skyhawks first hit of the game as she doubled to right center, but the team was leave her stranded after two ground outs and a fly out.

The Warriors extended its lead to three, 5-0, in the top of the second frame after the Skyhawks gave up only one error and Winona State left one batter on. Schleps singled to right field scoring Katelyn Kolb and Jaida Renin. The Warriors hopped back and forth until Larsen reached first on an error by the right side of the field throwing it clean sheet.

Winona fended off Stonehill, while the Skyhawks fended off the Warriors in the third inning.  Kolb singled to right field in the top of the fourth as Renin scored from third, giving the Warriors a 6-0 lead.

The Warriors were able to finish the game in the top of the fifth as Winona State launched two solo blasts, both to center field. Nowak and Van Zyl came in clutch with their homeruns as McKenna Larson shut the Skyhawks down in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-0 victory.

The Skyhawks take one day off, as they face Wilmington (Del.) University and West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 8 with a 2 and 4 p.m. start in Clermont, Florida.
