Stonehill Pulls Away Late in 6-3 Win Over Assumption

Staudle finishes a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI in win

WORCESTER, Mass. (March 24, 2016) – The Stonehill College softball team earned a 6-3 win over Assumption College this afternoon in Northeast-10 (NE-10) Conference action at Marios Field in Worcester, Massachusetts, running their winning streak to four games.

Led by senior Megan Staudle (New Windsor, New York/Cornwall Central) who finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and two run's, the heart of Stonehill's lineup finished a combined 7-for-10 with four RBI and four run's. Classmate Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Connecticut/Rocky Hill) posted a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk, a RBI and two run's, while junior Lianna Jordan (Staten Island, New York/St. Joseph By the Sea) finished 2-for-4.

Senior Sarah Ropiak (Acton, Massachusetts/Acton-Boxborough) earned the win on the mound for the Skyhawks, pitching 2.1 innings while giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and a strikeout. Junior Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) came on in relief in the third inning and pitched the remaining 4.2 innings, only allowing two hits while giving up one run.

For Assumption, freshman Julia Mazzeo (Milford, New Hampshire/Milford) went 1-for-2 with a RBI and sophomore Stephanie Menard (Cranston, Rhode Island/Cranston HS West) also contributed with a hit and RBI. Junior Courtney Olivia (Vernon, Connecticut/Rockville) dropped to 0-4 on the year with the loss today. Olivia pitched three innings and gave up four runs, as sophomore Kendal Roy (Grafton, Massachusetts/Grafton) took over in the fourth and allowed two runs on five hits.

Stonehill and Assumption would exchange runs for the first two innings, with the Skyhawks plating two runs in the third to take a 4-2 lead. Ruonavaara opened the third inning with a walk and Staudle doubled to drive her in. Senior Alison Sumski (Amherst, New Hampshire/Souhegan) followed up the double with a single, scoring Staudle. The Greyhounds responded in the fourth with a run cutting the Skyhawks lead to one.

Stonehill added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Staudle hit a clutch two RBI single. With one out, junior Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) singled to left field to get on base. Ruonavaara then singled though the left side of the infield to move Carbone into scoring position and Jordan followed with a single of her own to load the bases. Staudle stepped up to the plate and delivered with a two RBI single to give the Skyhawks a three run cushion heading into the final bottom half inning. Squeri set the Greyhounds down in order after surrendering a leadoff single as Stonehill earned their fourth straight victory.

Stonehill (8-9, 4-1 NE-10) is back in action Saturday as the Skyhawks are set to host Saint Anselm College for a double header starting at noon. Assumption (4-15, 1-6 NE-10) will look to snap a five game skid as the Greyhounds travel to Franklin Pierce on Friday for a single game at 4:00 p.m.
