Junior Sarah Ropiak strikes out five and allows just three hits over six innings
WALTHAM, Mass. (April 13, 2015) – Bentley University plated a run in the first inning on a passed ball and held Stonehill College off for a 1-0 victory this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball action at the Bentley Softball Field.
The Skyhawks outhit the Falcons 4-3, but had their five-game winning streak snapped with this afternoon's setback.
Junior Sarah Ropiak (Acton, Massachusetts/Acton-Boxborough) took the loss for Stonehill despite giving up just the one unearned run on three hits while striking out five and walking two through six innings.
Juniors Megan Staudle (New Windsor, New York/Cornwall Central) and Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Connecticut/Coginchaug), sophomore Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) and freshman Erin Brayden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) all singled for the Skyhawks, but Bentley junior Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Connecticut/Seymour) did not allow a run in her complete-game effort.
Sophomore Chelsea Vena (Matawan, New Jersey/Saint John Vianney) led the Falcons with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, while junior Morgan Mazone (Selkirk, New York/Bethlehem Central) doubled and sophomore Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, New Hampshire/Bedford) scored the game's only run.
After Stonehill stranded a pair of runners on base in the top of the first, Vena led off the bottom half of the inning for Bentley with a triple to left field. She was thrown out at home attempting to score on a fielder's choice by Kennedy, who advanced to third as Vena was caught in a rundown. Kennedy then came in to score on a passed ball, which would prove to be all of the run support that Ferris would need.
The Skyhawks did not record another hit until the fifth, when Esposito singled before stealing second base, but junior Alison Sumski (Amherst, New Hampshire/Souhegan) grounded out to end the inning.
Stonehill (11-9, 5-3 NE-10) will look to get back in the win column tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Saint Anselm College. Bentley (5-9, 2-3 NE-10) is off tomorrow before heading to Merrimack College for a pair of games on Wednesday.
