Sophomore Cassandra Squeri leads Skyhawks at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs
CLERMONT, Fla. (March 12, 2015) – The Stonehill College softball team bounced back from its two losses yesterday, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Dominican College today at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. Stonehill survived a late Dominican rally to win the opener, 4-3, before blanking the Chargers 4-0 in game two.
Sophomore outfielder Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) led the Skyhawks at the plate, going 4-for-5 over the doubleheader with a walk, two doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored. Junior catcher Megan Staudle (New Windsor, New York/Cornwall Central) added three hits and two runs, while classmate Alison Sumski (Amherst, New Hampshire/Souhegan) and sophomore Jacklyn Oleksak (Massapequa, New York/Plainedge) recorded two hits each.
Junior catcher Shannon Haukap (Edmonds, Washington/Meadowdale) and sophomore outfielder Elontay Collins (San Diego, California/Serra) paced Dominican's offense, going 2-for-6 with one run each. Sophomore infielder Ariana Trembone (Staten Island, New York/St. John Villa Academy) also recorded a pair of hits and drove in one run, while freshman Jillian Regan (Staten Island, New York/Tottenville) chipped in with a hit and one RBI.
Stonehill 4, Dominican 3
Stonehill scored four times in the first inning and junior Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Connecticut/Rocky Hill) held the Chargers to three runs (two earned) on four hits over 5.2 frames to pick up the victory.
Sumski and Staudle recorded consecutive singles to lead off the top of the first, and two batters later Squeri singled home the first run of the contest. After Oleksak grounded out for the second out of the inning, junior Cayleigh McCarthy (Norfolk, Massachusetts/King Phillip) belted a three-run homer to put the Skyhawks up 4-0.
Dominican got one run back in the fourth on an RBI double by Trembone, before adding two more in the sixth. Still trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Chargers loaded the bases with a chance to tie or win the game, but Stonehill sophomore Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) retired Regan to secure the win for the Skyhawks.

Junior Sarah Ropiak (Acton, Massachusetts/Acton-Boxborough) led the Skyhawks both in the circle and at the plate, turning in a two-hit shutout effort, while also going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Ropiak threw just 62 pitches in the contest, retiring the Chargers in order in four of seven innings.
Squeri and Staudle recorded two hits and one RBI each, while Sumski went 1-for-4 and scored a run. Ropiak plated the game's first run in the second with an RBI single, and the Skyhawks scored three more times in the third on RBI singles by Staudle, Squeri, and Ropiak. Dominican was unable to get a runner into scoring position at any point in the game as Ropiak improved to 3-1 this season.
Stonehill (4-4, 0-0 NE-10) will be off tomorrow before returning to action on Saturday with games against the University of Bridgeport (11 a.m.) and Minnesota State University Moorhead (1 p.m.). Dominican (1-3, 0-0 CACC) is set to take on LIU Post in a doubleheader tomorrow.
