Skyhawks fall to Knights, 5-0, and Saints, 5-3
CLERMONT, Fla. (March 11, 2015) – The Stonehill College softball team dropped both of its contests today at the Dot Richardson Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, falling to Queens College 5-0 and Limestone College by a 5-3 score.
Sophomores Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, New York/St. Anthony's) and Jacklyn Oleksak (Massapequa, New York/Plainedge) led the Skyhawks at the plate, going 3-for-7 over the two games with a double each. Classmate Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) added two hits, a walk, and one RBI, while junior Cayleigh McCarthy (Norfolk, Massachusetts/King Phillip) drove in one run.
Queens 5, Stonehill 0
Stonehill was shut out in its opener today, with Carbone, Squeri, and Oleksak recording one single each. Junior Sarah Ropiak (Acton, Massachusetts/Acton-Boxborough) took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits through 4.1 innings while striking out four and walking none.
Queens was led by sophomore outfielder Stevianne Ognibene (West Islip, New York/West Islip), who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two RBI. Classmate Kylie Spillett (Yaphank, New York/Longwood) also posted a 2-for-3 effort with a homer, while seniors Samantha Mattsson (Staten Island, New York/Tottenville) and Monique Roberge (New Hyde Park, New York/Sewanhaka) drove in one run each.
Senior Isabelle Yaroch (Annandale, Virginia/Annandale) earned the win for the Knights with a complete game shutout performance, striking out nine batters and walking two in the process.
Ognibene opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a solo home run, which would prove to be the difference in the contest. Neither team scored for the next three innings, until the Knights plated four more runs in the fifth to go up 5-0.
Spillett led off the inning with another solo homer, and later in the frame Ognibene singled in her second run of the game. After an RBI groundout by Mattsson, Roberge capped the scoring with an RBI single. Stonehill put a runner on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but was unable to advance past first.
Limestone 5, Stonehill 3
The Skyhawks more than doubled their hit total from their first game of the day with eight against Limestone, but the Saints broke a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the sixth inning and held on to win.

Carbone and Oleksak again paced Stonehill's offense, as both players went 2-for-4 at the plate, while McCarthy and Squeri drove in one run each and junior Megan Staudle (New Windsor, New York/Cornwall Central) went 1-for-2 and scored a run.
Carbone also started in the circle but did not earn a decision after giving up four runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings of work, while sophomore Klinnin Carson (Ellenboro, North Carolina/R-S Central) picked up the win in relief for Limestone.
Junior Darrian Jamison (Versailles, Kentucky/Newberry College) and freshman Sydney Turner (Cumming, Georgia/North Forsyth) recorded two hits each for the Saints, while sophomore Sam Thornton (Pauline, South Carolina/Dorman) drove in two runs.
Limestone took a 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the first two innings, before Stonehill tied the contest in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by Squeri and Oleksak. The Saints went ahead again in the fourth with the benefit of a Stonehill throwing error, but the Skyhawks answered in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game for the second time as McCarthy singled up the middle, scoring freshman Olivia Peterson (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy).
Freshman Camry Taylor (Inman, South Carolina/Boiling Springs) scored the game-winning run for Limestone in the top of the sixth after coming on as a pinch-runner, advancing to second on a wild pitch and stealing third before crossing the plate with the help of another error. The Saints added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Thornton, and the Skyhawks went down in order in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Stonehill (2-4, 0-0 NE-10) will look to bounce back tomorrow with a doubleheader against Dominican College. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the second to follow at 3 p.m.
