Stonehill Bounces Back for Split with Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 17, 2011) – Stonehill College bounced back from a tough game one loss to claim a split with Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader at Pelz Field on Saturday afternoon. Southern Connecticut stormed to an 8-0 win in five innings in game one, before Stonehill regrouped and held off the Owls for a 9-8 triumph in game two.

Freshman Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the doubleheader, while senior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Sophomore Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) drove in four runs for the Skyhawks, while junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) collected three RBI.

Sophomore Stacy Pouliot (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) hit a combined 6-for-7 for Southern Connecticut State on the afternoon with a triple, home run, five RBI and two runs scored. Classmate Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) was 5-for-7 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored, three RBI and two stolen bases.

Southern Connecticut State 8, Stonehill 0 (5 innings)

Stacy Pouliot drove in four runs and junior Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo./Smokyhill) tossed a one-hit shutout over five innings as Southern Connecticut State rolled to an 8-0 win in game one.

Pouliot hit 3-for-3 with a triple, home run, two runs scored and four RBI. Sophomore Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) batted 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, while junior Jessica Rosa (Wallingford, Conn./Mercy) went 1-for-1 with a home run and two RBI. Kristin Whitley finished 2-for-3 with a double, stolen base and two runs scored.

Larson (9-6) allowed the one hit over five scoreless innings, striking out three and walking two over the five innings in the circle for the Owls.

Sophomore Casey Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton) had the lone hit for Stonehill and finished 1-for-2 at the plate. Junior Kellie Reardon (Burlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) took the loss (0-3), yielding six earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk in four plus innings.

Southern Connecticut scored four runs in the first and fifth innings to claim the win. Pouliot delivered a two-run triple, while Rosa smacked a two-run homer for the Owls in the first. Downs drove in a pair with a single in the fifth, before Pouliot followed that with a two-run homer to end the game.

Stonehill 9, Southern Connecticut State 8

Stonehill opened an 8-4 lead after four innings and held off a late Southern Connecticut State rally for a 9-8 win in game two.

Kelsey Wilcox went 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored, while Chelsea Stryker batted 2-for-4 with three RBI for Stonehill. Senior Ashley Langlois and freshman Christina Swider both hit 2-for-4 with a run scored. Senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, an RBI and two runs scored.

Freshman Nicole Schneider (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) picked up the win (3-3) in the circle for the Skyhawks, allowing eight runs, all earned, on 14 hits with three strikeouts and three walks in a complete game effort.

Kristin Whitley hit 3-for-4 with a double, stolen base, three RBI and a run scored for Southern Connecticut. Stacy Pouliot finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, while junior Jillian Thibault (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Sophomore Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J./Paramus Catholic) chipped in by going 2-for-4 with a triple, stolen base and run scored.

Junior Brittany Hill (Durham, Conn./Coginchaug Regional) took the loss (2-7), allowing eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and four walk over four innings. Jayme Larson yielded an earned run on three hits and three walks with no strikeouts over the final three frames.

The teams traded runs in the first and Stonehill regained a one-run lead in the top of the second when Langlois singled and scored when Stryker reached on a fielder's choice. Southern answered with three in the home half to take a 4-2 lead as Bucko tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Shawna Mallory (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal), senior Robin Priest (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) singled and scored on a wild pitch and Whitley followed with an RBI double.

Stonehill answered right back with four in the third to regain the lead as Wilcox drove in two with a single and Stryker delivered a two run single after Hill retired the first two batters of the inning. The Skyhawks added two more in the fourth for an 8-4 lead when Abarr walked before Wilcox delivered her team leading ninth home run of the season.

Southern scored in the fifth with an RBI single by Jessica Rosa, but Stonehill got it right back in the top of the sixth as Kaitlin Miller walked and scored on a single by freshman Brianna Gunter (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan). The Owls rallied with three in the home half of the sixth to draw within a run when Whitley delivered a two run single and Alyssa Downs drove in another, but Schneider held the Owls right there to clinch the win.

Stonehill (12-20, 8-8 NE-10) is back in action on Monday when it hosts rival Bentley University of a Northeast-10 doubleheader at Fr. Gartland Field at 3 p.m. Southern Connecticut (15-14, 8-6 NE-10) hosts Bentley on Sunday at noon.
