Assumption Powers to Stonehill Sweep

Greyhounds belts four homers in 9-3 game one win, holds on for 5-4 game two victory

EASTON, Mass. (April 10, 2011) – Assumption College powered its way to a doubleheader sweep of Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference softball action at Fr. William Gartland, CSC, Field this afternoon. The Greyhounds posted a 9-3 win in game one, before notching a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Sophomore Lauren Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) led the offensive charge for Assumption that racked up 20 hits, including seven for extra bases, as she went a combined 5-for-7 with four runs scored, a double, two home runs and six RBI. Freshman Nicole Boris (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) hit 3-for-8 with a home run and two runs scored.

Sophomore Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) helped pace Stonehill as she hit a combined 2-for-5 with a pair of walks, a double and three runs scored. Freshman Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) was also 2-for-5.

Assumption 9, Stonehill 3

Assumption got all nine of its runs off four home runs, making the most of eight hits to claim a 9-3 victory over Stonehill in game one.

Lauren Medeiros was 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and five RBI for Assumption. Nicole Boris batted 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, while senior Bernadette Fuentes (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) hit 2-for-3 with a run scored. Freshman Tanya Robidoux (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) finished 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.

Junior Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) earned the win for Assumption (3-5), allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with 16 strikeouts and just two walks in the complete game effort.

Junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) led Stonehill as she hit 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) and sophomore Kaitlin Miller (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) both went 1-for-3 with a home run.

Freshman Nicole Schneider (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) took the loss (2-3), yielding six runs, five earned, on four hits and a walk.

Assumption jumped in front with a pair in the first as sophomore Melissa Jalbert (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) reached on an error before Medeiros smacked her first home run of the game. The Greyhounds added three in the second when Boris singled and freshman Kolby Davenport (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) walked before Robidoux belted her first home run of the season with two out.

Assumption extended its lead to 9-0 with four in the fourth as Boris led off with her third home run of the season to chase Schneider and then Medeiros' second blast of the game scored three.

Stonehill got a run back in the home half of the fourth as Abarr led off with her second homer of the season. The Skyhawks extended the game in the bottom of the fifth with Miller's third homer of the season with two out. Stonehill closed out the scoring with a run in the seventh as freshman pinch hitter Angela Moskwa (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) was hit by a pitch and then scored on a single by Stryker.


Freshman Christina Swider was 2-for-4 in game two for the Skyhawks. 
Assumption 5, Stonehill 4

Assumption collected 12 more hits and held off a late Stonehill rally to claim a 5-4 win in game two.

Lauren Medieros went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored for Assumption, while senior Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, two RBI and a run scored. Senior Amy Gordon (Seekonk, Mass./Bishop Feehan) chipped in by going 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base and two RBI. Melissa Jalbert hit 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Junior Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) picked up the win (8-3) in the circle for Assumption, allowing two earned runs on three hits and a walk over 4.1 innings of relief. Classmate Casey Halajian (Quincy, Mass./Archbishop Williams) started and yielded two runs, one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk over 2.2 innings.

Kelsey Wilcox led Stonehill by hitting 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Christina Swider went 2-for-4, while freshman Brianna Gunter (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) batted 1-for-2 with a double and RBI.

Junior Kellie Reardon (Burlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) took the loss (0-2), allowing three unearned runs on ten hits with a strikeout and a walk over 5.1 innings.

The teams traded runs in the first as Jalbert singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored on a double by Medieros for Assumption. Stonehill answered in the home half as Wilcox doubled with one out and scored on a single by freshman Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven).

Assumption scored twice in the third on a two-out two run single by Palumbo. Stonehill got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third when Wilcox led off with a walk and scored on a single by Katy Abarr.

Assumption struck for two insurance runs in the seventh with a two-out two run double by Gordon. Stonehill rallied in the bottom of the frame as Wilcox led off with a single and scored on Gunter's double. Senior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) drove in a run on a ground out, putting the tying run on third, but Durso got another ground out to end the game.

Stonehill (10-18, 6-6 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it concludes its eight game home stand against rival Bentley University at 3 p.m. Assumption (13-10, 7-3 NE-10) hosts Pace University on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
