Stonehill Opens Spring Break Trip with Split

Northwood rallies for 10-7 win in game one
Skyhawks post 10-6 win in eight innings in game two

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 12, 2011) – Stonehill College opened its 2011 season by splitting a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games today. Northwood (Mich.) University rallied for a 10-7 victory in game one of the day, before Stonehill picked up a 10-6 triumph over Wheeling Jesuit University in game two.

Northwood collected 14 hits and took advantage of eight Stonehill errors, scoring five runs over its last two at bats to post the 10-7 victory.

Sophomore Kaitlin Miller (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) led Stonehill's ten hit attack by going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Freshman Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) was 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while classmate Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) finished 1-for-1 with three walks, two runs scored and a stolen base in their collegiate debuts. Junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenburg Memorial) batted 2-for-5 with a run scored.


Kaitlin Miller was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in game one.

Northwood scored three runs in the top of the first and then extended the lead to 4-0 with a run in the top of the third. Stonehill got on the board with four runs in the home half of the third to knot the score, keyed by a two-run home run by freshman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) for her first collegiate hit. Sophomore Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) opened the scoring with an RBI double before scoring on McKillop's blast. Miller rounded out the scoring in the frame with an RBI single.

Northwood regained the lead with a run in the fourth, but Stonehill forged ahead with a three-run fifth. Morrell drew a two-out walk, followed by an RBI double from Miller, who advanced to third on a Northwood error. Senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) followed with a single, and then stole second, before freshman Angela Moskwa (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) drove them both in with a pinch-hit single for a 7-5 lead.

Northwood rallied, however, taking one run back in the sixth before scoring four in the top of the seventh for the win.

Stonehill 10, Wheeling Jesuit 6 (8 innings)

Stonehill bounced back by scoring six runs in the top of the eighth inning to post a come-from-behind 10-6 victory over Wheeling Jesuit in game two of the day.

Katy Abarr paced Stonehill's 11-hit effort by going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Nicole Eisenmann hit 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Christina Swider finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) batted 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while senior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Wheeling Jesuit led 4-0 after four innings, scoring once in the first and adding three more in the fourth. Stonehill knotted the score with a four run sixth. Abarr drove in the first run with an RBI double, before Wilcox delivered a three-run homer.

Neither team scored in the seventh and then Stonehill erupted for six runs in the top of the eighth. Abarr put the Skyhawks in front with another RBI double, followed by a two-run single by Langlois. Sophomore Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional), Swider and Eisenmann all contributed RBI singles for Stonehill to run the lead to 10-4 before Wheeling Jesuit got two runs back in the bottom of the inning.

 

Stonehill (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Sunday morning when it faces LIU-C.W. Post for an East Regional matchup at 9 a.m., before playing the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at 11 a.m.
