Men’s Cross Country Places Fourth at Shawn M. Nassaney Invitational

Taxter led the way for the Skyhawks first race of the season


Wheelock was one of seven Skyhawks to score points for the team

SMITHFIELD, Rhode Island (September 8, 2018) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, ranked No. 1 in the East Region and No. 15 in the nation in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Preseason Poll, finished fourth with 119 points at the Shawn M. Nassaney Invitational, hosted by Bryant University Saturday morning.

Northeastern University took home the title scoring 36 points, while Central Connecticut College totaled 72 points, placing second. Boston College earned third place with the 84 points, while the Skyhawks followed in fourth with 119 points and Rhode Island College combined for 135 points, food for fifth place.

Senior Lucas Taxter was the first Skyhawk to cross the finish line with a time of 25:54.5 in the eight-kilometer race taking home 16th place. Classmate Alexander Demeule followed Taxter with a time of 25:57.7, good for 17th out of 93 competitors. Riley Dowd also placed in the top 25 with a time of 26:04.5, good for 23rd.

Sophomores Kevin Wheelock and Jeff Pichie were the next Skyhawks across the finish line finishing 32nd and 33rd. Wheelock clocked in a time of 26:19.2, while Pichie finished in 26:21.9. Freshman Nicholas McNamee and senior Lawrence Carney were the final two to earn points for the Skyhawks in the varsity race taking home 41st and 42nd, respectively. McNamee clocked in a time of 26:43.5 in his first-collegiate race, while Carney finished in 26:50.8.

Senior Christopher Drace also competed in the varsity race, clocking in a time of 27:19.7, good for 56th place, while junior Chris Gendron tallied a 62nd mark, finishing in 27:30.0.

The Skyhawks travel to Kutztown, Pennsylvania for the Kutztown Division II Challenge hosted by Kutztown University on Saturday, September 15.
