#23 Men's Cross Country Finishes Sixth at New England Championships

BOSTON, Mass. (October 10, 2015) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, ranked No. 23 in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Poll, ran to a sixth place finish this afternoon at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

Stonehill's sixth place effort is good for its second highest finish ever at New Englands, after placing fifth overall in 2009. The Skyhawks compiled a team score of 212 on their way to sixth place in the 38-team field consisting of Division I, II, and III programs. Boston University won the team title (153), while Amherst College (176), the University of Maine (199), and Dartmouth College (207) finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Senior Rob Massey (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford), who was running in his third career New England Championship race this afternoon, paced Stonehill with his 24th  place finish in 25:17.2 on the eight-kilometer course.

Classmate Dan Gordon (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) also turned in a top-30 effort, finishing 27th overall in 25:21.3, while junior Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) placed 32nd and clocked in at 25:25.8.

Rounding out Stonehill's five scoring runners was the freshman duo of Riley Dowd (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorial) and Lawrence Carney (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell). Dowd crossed the finish line 68th in 25:46.4, and Carney followed in 73rd with a time of 25:48.3.

Classmates Alexander Demeule (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) and John Onken (Holbrook, New York/Sachem North) were the final two Skyhawk entries in the varsity race, finishing 134th (26:24.5) and 172nd (26:54.0), respectively.

Stonehill, which is also the top-ranked team in the USTFCCCA East Region Rankings, will be back in action next Friday, October 16th at the Bruce Kirsh Cross Country Cup, hosted by Franklin Pierce University at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds in Hopkinton, New Hampshire.
