Senior Dan Zawalich paces Skyhawks with third place finish in 30:46.2
RINDGE, N.H. (October 18, 2014) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, ranked No. 24 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll, and ranked third in the East Region Poll, placed three runners inside the top-10 today to capture the Gates Farm Northeast-10 Conference Preview Meet, hosted by Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire.
Senior Dan Zawalich (Paxton, Massachusetts/St. John's) led the first group of Skyhawks across the finish line with his third-place effort in 30:46.2, marking the third time this fall that the senior has been Stonehill's top finisher.
Classmates Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Connecticut/Southington) and Trent Fontanella (Pelham, New Hampshire/Bishop Guertin) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, completing the eight-kilometer course less than a second after Zawalich with marks of 30:46.5 and 30:46.8.
Senior Paul Cina (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) paced the second pack of Skyhawks, as he turned in a time of 31:43.6, good for 11th overall. Following Cina was senior Dan Gordon (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North), sophomore Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport), and junior Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Indiana/Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) in spots 12-14.
Gordon posted a time of 31:43.9, while Santo, who was the first Skyhawk to finish at last weekend's New England Championships, earned a 31:44.3 mark and Kirkpatrick clocked in at 31:44.7.
Rounding out Stonehill's entries today was sophomore Tyler Henseler (Coventry, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken), who finished 16th overall out of 46 participants with a time of 31:51.9.
Stonehill won today's meet with a total of 35 points. The College of Saint Rose finished second with 43 points, followed by host Franklin Pierce (86 points), Saint Michael's College (93 points), and Saint Anselm College (126 points).
Stonehill will be off for the next two weekends before returning to Rindge to attempt to capture its fourth consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Sunday, November 9th.
