Stonehill Places Second At Minutemen Invitational

Penney finishes third overall in 24:26.42, a new career best

AMHERST, Mass. (September 15, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, ranked 25th overall in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) Division II preseason poll, placed second overall out of five teams at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Minutemen Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

UMass Amherst won the invitational with 39 points, Stonehill finished second with 45 points and the University of Connecticut ranked third (81 points). Amherst College was fourth overall (85) and Keene State College finished fifth (129 points).

Senior captain Ethan Penney (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) led the Skyhawks with a third place finish on the 8-kilomoter course running a career best time of 24:26.42.

Stonehill's next five runners finished in a pack as Paul Cina (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) headlined the group in eighth place with a time of 24:47.13.

Sophomore Dan Gordon (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) ranked ninth (24:52.67), Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's) was tenth (25:53.58), Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) placed 11th overall (24:54.30) and Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) rounded out the assembly of Skyhawks in 12th place (24:57.20).

Junior Stephen Leonard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished 16th overall with a time of 25 minutes and 1.17-seconds to fill out Stonehill's top-7 runners.

Stonehill returns to action on Friday, September 28 at the Paul Short Invitational, hosted by Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at 10 a.m.
