Fontanella Named NE-10 Rookie of the Week

Pelham, N.H., native collects honors following strong collegiate debut

EASTON, Mass. (September 17, 2010) – Stonehill College freshman Trent Fontanella (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Guertin) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference men's cross country Rookie of the Week by the league office.

Fontanella helped lead Stonehill to the team title at last weekend's Trinity Bantams Invitational as he posted a fifth place finish in his collegiate debut. He completed the five-kilometer course in 16:17 to finish among three Skyhawks in the top five and was the top freshman finisher at the meet. Fontanella finished within 55-second of the first place finisher and 23-seconds behind senior Patrick Fullerton (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill), the top Skyhawks finisher in second overall.

Stonehill claimed the team title at the event for the second-straight year by placing all five of its scoring runners in the top ten and ten runners in the top 20. Each of the Skyhawks scorers finished within a span of 44-seconds and the ten runners who finished in the top 20 completed the course in the span of 1:01.

Stonehill, ranked 19th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II preseason poll, is back in action on Saturday when it participates in the Quinnipiac Invitational in Hamden, Conn., starting at noon.
