Skyhawks emerge from men's singles qualifiers to compete in Championship starting today
FLUSHING, N.Y. (September 14, 2019) – Two members of the Stonehill College men's tennis team advanced through singles qualifiers on Friday night and will compete in the main draw of the championship starting Saturday morning at the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional at the USTA/Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Junior Russell White and freshman Christian Duffy both earned first round byes and then won their second round qualifiers to advance to the championship bracket. White defeated Val Goupil-Maier from Adelphi University, 8-4 and Duffy breezed past Erik Jorsal from Chestnut Hill College, 8-0 in their first matches of the weekend. The duo will enter the round of 64 of the Men's Championship bracket this morning.
Junior Trent Newman won his opening round qualifier against Joe Alvord from Post University, 8-3, but was then halted by Mariano Biblioni from Queens (N.Y.) College, 8-6 in the second round. Senior Samuel Miller and sophomore Juan Camilo Riano Rojas both received first round byes, but were edged in their second round qualifiers. Seniors Aaron Diamond and Manu Ravichandrakumar, along with sophomore Vincent Huynh were all defeated in the first round of qualifying.
Following the singles qualifiers, the opening round of the doubles championshjp got underway, with two Stonehill pairings advancing to Saturday. Newman and White won the match of the day with a 9-8 (7-4) triumph over the Southern New Hampshire University duo of Fernando Torres and Oscar Hakwen. Riano Rojas and freshman Ben Simmons edged Ethan Hall and Brady Ryan from Assumption, 9-7. Stonehill's doubles tandems of Huynh and junior Aleksander Lazowski, along with Miller and Duffy were defeated in their opening round matches.
