Men’s Tennis Announces NLI Signing

Riano, a native of Bogota, Colombia, residing in Bradenton, Florida, will join Skyhawks in fall

EASTON, Mass. (May 25, 2018) – The Stonehill College men's tennis program has announced the commitment of Juan Riano, a native of Bogota, Colombia, who now resides in Bradenton, Florida, attending IMG Academy, to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) this spring and will compete with the program starting in September.

Riano, the son of Nixon Riano and Nancy Rojas, was born in Bogota and moved to Florida at the age of 15 to attend and train at IMG Academy in Bradenton. He was a Top 30 juniors player in his native Colombia, participating in the South America Tennis Confederation (COSAT) the South American junior tour.

Riano got his start playing tennis at the age of nine, later competing for the Bogota Tennis League for five years prior to deciding to move to Florida to attend IMG. While at IMG Academy, Riano competed on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior tour, participated at the prestigious Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl Championships, and was trained by Paul Forsyth, Juan Herrera, Ryuji Hirooka, Justin Pickham, Juan Mateus and Red Ayme, among others.

Riano, who plans to pursue a degree in health science, chose Stonehill, "because it offered the most complete opportunity to accomplish my goal of playing college tennis, study and learn from a lot of experiences to allow me to create a well-developed resume to pursue med school upon graduation."

Stonehill finished its 2017-18 season with a 10-9 record overall, including 4-5 in the NE10 to earn a spot in the NE10 Tournament for a Conference record matching 18th time after a one year hiatus.
