Singles Sweep Lifts Aquinas over Men's Tennis, 7-2

Saints erase doubles deficit with six singles wins

HAINES CITY, Fla. (March 10, 2017) – Aquinas College of Michigan swept the six singles matches to erase a 2-1 deficit after doubles play and claim a 7-2 victory over Stonehill College in non-conference men's tennis action at Lake Eva Park today.

Junior Evan Taylor (Grand Rapids, Michigan/Forest Hills Central) was a double-winner for Aquinas with wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. He teamed up with sophomore Austin Luker (Ann Arbor, Michigan/Ann Arbor Huron) for the Saints lone doubles point with an 8-4 decision at No. 3. Taylor added a 6-2, 6-4 singles win against Stonehill sophomore Dimitri Vlassov (Marblehead, Massachusetts/Marblehead).

Stonehill won two of the three doubles matches in tiebreakers, with juniors Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) edging Aquinas' sibling tandem of senior Gunnar Peery (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan/Brother Rice) and sophomore Chase Peery (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan/Brother Rice), the sixth-ranked doubles team in the NAIA Midwest region in the Oracle/ITA rankings, 9-8 (7-5) at No. 1 doubles. Bellio also battled junior Jordan Lomas (San Diego, California/Torrey Pines) at No. 1 singles before falling in a third set tiebreak 6-3, 3-6, 12-10.

Junior Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) and freshman Manu Ravichandrakumar (Chennai, India/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) added a 9-8 (7-4) victory at No. 2 doubles against the Aquinas tandem of juniors Kenny Garstecki (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Ryan Fedewa (Spring Lake, Michigan/Spring Lake).

Stonehill (2-4, 0-0 NE10) is off until next Wednesday, March 15, when it hosts Assumption College for its Northeast-10 Conference opener at 3:30 p.m. Aquinas (10-3, 0-0 WHAC) is off until next Saturday, March 18, when it visits the University of Notre Dame for a match at 6 p.m.
