Cedarville Rallies Past Men's Tennis in Singles Play, 6-3

Skyhawks can't make 2-1 edge after doubles matches stand

HAINES CITY, Fla. (March 6, 2017) – Cedarville University battled back from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play by winning five of the six singles matches to claim a 6-3 victory over Stonehill College in non-conference men's tennis action at Lake Eva Tennis Park today.

Senior Ryan Shomo (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) posted singles and doubles wins to lead Cedarville to the win. He teamed up with sophomore Jeremy Hoover (Spencerville, Indiana/Blackhawk Christian) for the Hornets lone doubles point with their 9-7 decision at No. 3. Shomo followed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles against Stonehill freshman Manu Ravichandrakumar (Chennai, India/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)).

Stonehill held a 2-1 lead after doubles play, taking the top two flights. Juniors Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) posted an 8-3 win at No. doubles, while classmate Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) and Ravichandrakumar edged out an 8-6 decision at No. 2. Junior Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) earned the Skyhawks lone singles point with his 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 against Hoover.

Stonehill (2-2, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday when it faces Findlay University at the USTA National Center in Orlando, Florida, at 8 a.m. The Skyhawks next home match is Wednesday, March 15, when they host Assumption College for its Northeast-10 Conference opener at 3:30 p.m. Cedarville (4-5, 0-0 GMC) plays Judson College tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
