Stonehill Gets Back on Track Against Clark, 7-2

Hyzak leads Skyhawks to bounce back win in home return 

EASTON, Mass. (March 22, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked 9th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings released on Wednesday, returned to the win column with a 7-2 victory over Clark University in non-conference men's tennis action at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex today.

Senior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and juniors Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) and Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) led the double-winners for Stonehill, which bounced back from back to back setbacks to close out its spring break trip last week. Hyzak and Drzal combined to claim an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles before Hyzak added a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles over Clark senior Dan Stein (Newton, Mass./Newton North). Drzal breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles against junior Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn./Waterford).

Alaimo and junior Jon Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles for Stonehill. Alaimo added a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles over junior Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley), while Sanders rounded out the Skyhawks double-winners with an 8-2 pro-set decision at No. 6 singles against junior Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde). Senior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and junior Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) completed a Stonehill sweep of the three doubles matches with their 9-7 win at No. 1.

Sophomores Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Yardley) and Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) picked up Clark's two points with their singles wins. Martin rallied for a 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 10-5 decision over Ringstad at No. 2, while Pinoargote posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 against Armstrong.

Stonehill (8-2, 4-0 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow when it visits Queens (N.Y.) College, ranked sixth in the East Region, for a key non-conference matchup at noon. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday, March 29, to host American International College for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at 1 p.m. Clark (8-3, 0-0 NEWMAC) hosts Rhode Island College on Monday at 4 p.m.
