Poli and Souto help Huskies hand Skyhawks first loss
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 11, 2014) – Saint Cloud State University handed Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, its first loss of the year with a 5-4 victory in non-conference men's tennis action at Star Island Resort this morning.
Junior Joao Poli (Londrina, Brazil) and freshman Joao Vitor Souto (Londrina, Brazil) were both double-winners to lead Saint Cloud State to the win. Poli combined with Joao Orsi (Londrina, Brazil) for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles as the Huskies won two of three doubles matches to key the win. Poli added a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles over Stonehill senior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford). Souto added a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles over sophomore Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) after teaming up with freshman Nathanial Cherry (Rapid City, S.D./Central) at No. 2 doubles.
Junior Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) was a double-winner for Stonehill. He teamed up with classmate Jon Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) for the Skyhawks lone doubles point with an 8-6 decision at No. 3. Alaimo followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over sophomore Bryan Amigo LaRosa (Palma de Mallorca, Spain).
Junior Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) added a point for Stonehill by rallying for a 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 decision at No. 2 singles against Orsi. Senior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cherry at No. 4 singles.
Stonehill (7-1, 4-0 NE-10) returns to the courts tomorrow when it faces Roger Williams University at Star Island Resort at 11:30 a.m. The Skyhawks return home to host Clark University for a non-league matchup on Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. Saint Cloud State (6-8) has a second match today against Aquinas College.
