Drzal and Alaimo guide Skyhawks to victory in spring break opener 

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 10, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, opened its spring break schedule with a 5-4 victory over Saint Lawrence University in non-conference men's tennis action at Oak Street Park today.

Juniors Jared Drzal (West Sayville, Sayville) and Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) kept Stonehill unbeaten with its second spring win as they both picked up wins in singles and doubles play. Drzal teamed up with senior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) for an 8-6 triumph at No. 2 doubles. Drzal, winners of his last 12 singles matches including a 7-0 mark this year, followed with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 5 singles against freshman Kevin Frommer (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central). Alaimo combined with classmate Jon Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles to clinch a 2-1 split in doubles play for the Skyhawks. Alaimo then added a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 6 singles over freshman Elliot Solandt (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes).

Junior Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) added a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win at No.2 singles over sophomore Rob Schmitz (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) to extend his winning streak to seven singles matches for Stonehill.

Sophomore Paul Barrett (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) was the lone double-winner for Saint Lawrence, which had entered the match winners of its first four contests of the season and unbeaten in doubles play. He combined with Schmitz for an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles and then claimed a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles over senior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy). Sophomore Rhonny Rosario (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) added a win at No. 1 singles, while junior John Megas (Longmeadow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee) notched a victory at No. 3 singles.

Stonehill (7-0, 4-0 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow when it faces Saint Cloud State University at Star Island Resort in Kissimmee at 8 a.m. The Skyhawks return home to host Clark University for a non-league matchup on Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. Saint Lawrence (4-1, 0-0 LLC) battles The College of New Jersey on Tuesday.
