Stonehill Defeats Southern Maine in Spring Opener, 8-1


Senior Brett Armstrong was a double-winner for the Skyhawks tonight.

Ringstad and Armstrong lead double-winners for Skyhawks 

EASTON, Mass. (March 1, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, opened its spring schedule with an 8-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine in non-conference men's tennis action at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex tonight.

Senior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and junior Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) led four double-winners for Stonehill in the victory. The duo combined for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles and then Ringstad rallied for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles over sophomore Max Wiley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Island School). Armstrong also claimed a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 decision over junior Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) at No. 4 singles.

Juniors Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) were also double-winners for Stonehill. Drzal rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 decision over junior Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) at No. 5 singles after combining with senior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) at No. 2 doubles. Alaimo cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over senior Corey Dyke (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) after teaming up with classmate Jon Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) added a point for the Skyhawks with his 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 singles against freshman Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine/Gorham).

Sophomore Tyler Adams (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) notched the lone point for Southern Maine with his 6-1, 6-4 decision over Hyzak at No. 1 singles.

Stonehill (6-0, 4-0 NE-10) returns to action on Monday, March 10, when it opens its spring break trip with a non-conference matchup with Saint Lawrence University at Oak Street Park in Kissimmee, Fla., at 11:30 a.m. The Skyhawks return home to host Clark University for a non-league matchup on Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. Southern Maine (0-1, 0-0 LEC) is at Southern New Hampshire University next Sunday, March 9, at 5 p.m.
