Ringstad and Armstrong lead the Skyhawk double-winners
DeWITT, N.Y. (September 21, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked 10th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, notched its third win to start the season with an 8-1 victory over Le Moyne College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Gold's Gym today.
Senior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and junior Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) led five double-winners for Stonehill as it rode a 3-0 sweep of doubles play to the win. The duo combined for an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles before Ringstad rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Le Moyne junior Shane Evans (Oswego, N.Y./Pulaski) and Armstrong won a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 matchup with senior Alessandro Nieves (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) at No. 3 singles.
Juniors Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and Jon Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) as well as sophomore Will Brosnan (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) closed out the double-winners for Stonehill. Drzal breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles over senior Daryl Johnson (Minoa, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) after teaming up with senior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, N.Y./Guilford) for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Sanders and Brosnan teamed up for an 8-2 decision at No. 3 doubles and then Sanders posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over freshman Benjamin Spoor (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) at No. 5 singles, while Brosnan recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles over freshman Adam Celeta (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Regional).
Freshman James Gayvert (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) picked up Le Moyne's lone point with his 6-4, 6-1 victory over Hyzak at No. 1 singles.
Stonehill (3-0, 2-0 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow when it visits Saint Michael's College for an NE-10 matchup at noon. The Skyhawks return home to host its Stonehill Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, October 5-6. Holy Cross (0-1, 0-0 Patriot) will participate in the Connecticut College Tournament tomorrow.
